  • Computer Spontaneously Reboots PART 2

    Ok,

For those who were following my previous thread and for those who weren't.

I was having problems with my Computer rebooting.
I ran memtest and found 1 of my 2 - 1GB Corsair Modules bad.
I call Tech Support and they send new Memory.
Pop the new memory in and computer crashes again.
Test the new chips with MEMTEST and they come out with NO errors.

I pop in an old 512MB DDR333 Corsair chip and the computer runs fine.
I pop in a second 512MB chip and still runs fine.

I take those 2 chips out and pop in 1 of the new 1GB chips and computer crashes.
Set the BIOS to the setting that Tech Support and Dick Blonov tell me to set them to and computer crashes.

    So to sum it up,

looks like the computer will run fine with the 512MB chips but not with the 1GB chips either together or separately.

i checked the new chips over and over again with MEMTEST ( 3-4 Passes ) and they came out good.

Could it be that the power supply can handle the 512MB chips at DDR333 and DDR266 but not the 1 GB modules @ DDR400 ??

Other components in the rig are:

    MB is a ASRock 939DUAL-SATA2

    2 HDDS ( ATA )
    EVGA 7800GTX
    SB X-FI FATAL1TY
    DVD-BURNER
    FLOPPY
    5 CASE FANS

Power Supply is a CHIEFMAX 550W

My next move was to purchase a new PS to see what happens.

Please shed some light on this dilemma if you have any comments as to what it may be .....

    Thanks !!

    It might be the motherboard.

Try flashing your BIOS; like squeak said, it might be the mobo, and if you don't have the latest BIOS that might be your problem.

Yeah, i was just looking at the BIOS update descriptions and all they list is more compatibility with new CPU's that have come out ... nothing about anything else ...

Strange. When does it crash ? Right at boot up ?

To me it sounds like a bad motherboard. I could understand it if those were high-density RAM sticks since a lot of motherboards have issues with those, but if they are just Corsair value sticks you should be fine.

Try updating the bios and if that doesn't help, look into getting a new MB.

I really doubt if it's you PS though.

Well, at first it would crash after a little bit .... I would leave the computer running ... come back downstairs to it after a while and it would have the BSOD ( Blue Screen of Death )

Just recently, it would POST up at all ... it would just go right to a BSOD.

I took the 2 - 1 GB sticks out and put my old 512MB chip in and it hasn't crashed yet ( since Thursday-Friday )

yeah ... Me and Dustermahn have been discussing this and we kind if feel it would either be the MB or PS ....

I plan on ordering a new MB today ....

Any suggestions on a MOTHERBOARD ?

                I have a AMD 64 3700+ processor

I like anything Asus or Abit personally. The new ATI RD580 boards are getting some really good reviews, but are pricey.

The A8N32-SLI mobo is a pretty good bet (by Asus).
