  • Your opinions on a small, light weight, cheaper MiniDV camcorder

I'll be going to Spain for the month of July this summer, and I've decided that I'm going to buy a camera to take with me, so I can edit some footage and make a movie. I don't want to spend more than $400. I have experience (and access to) prosumer 3CCD cameras from my television station at school, but I don't know much anything about the low end market camcorders.

    Features I want:
    Small, light weight, portable
    Cheap
An audio in port (a must!)
    An audio out/headphone port (preferred)
    MiniDV
Firewire port (I'm almost positive they all have this, but just in case they don't)

And, if it's not obvious, I want an NTSC camera.. I'll be in Spain, but my camera won't have anything to do with their televisions

I've got a middle-of-the-line Sony (TRV-22) and love it... very usable - stabilized lense, good on batteries, all the right I/O...

also - whichever cam you get, DEFINITELY get a wide-angle lens for it! It should run you about $40 for a 0.6x lense, and it's worth every penny!

I looked at that model on CNET. I didn't like that it is bottom loading for tapes. If I have it on a tripod, and need to change out tapes, I don't wanna have to take it off the tripod to load a new tape.

I'm looking at the Cannon Elura 100. It can shoot in wide screen format. Here's a couple links on it:

Can anyone add anything to this thread five months later? I'm interested in a mini camcorder, but I have no idea what I want. I just need to shoot simple films... nothing fancy.
