  • Need help with moving website to new server.

Well, I am having a lot of trouble with the current host of my website.
At times, and it is happening very frequently, my site becomes PAINFULLY slow and my customers are complaining about that and they tell me they just leave the site because it is too slow.

My subscription with them is up on Sept 11th, and I would like to switch it to another server but do not know how to move everything so it will work as it is now.

If there is anyone out there who can give me a hand, I will throw them a little cash for the help.

Also, If you have any suggestions on a host, I would appreciate that as well.

I am currently looking at Liquid Web Inc. - 800-580-4985 - Web Hosting Professionals and 1&1 Internet Inc. - Web Hosting Services and Domain Name Registration

Thank You to all that reply.

What do you have that would need to be moved? Just PHP and MySQL stuff?

I use these two hosting companies for my business needs. They offer pretty good service and packages.

Then moving shouldn't be much of an issue... copy everything locally, and export out the SQL from MyPHPAdmin, and plop it all down in the new place. Shouldn't be more than editing a couple of variables in a config file somewhere (MySQL server vars), provided that the site is created well.

Re: Need help with moving website to new server.

Like Pokerface said, there may some differences with the way PHP is set up between the servers. So a couple of things to look out for are PHP versions, register and short tags. (Ie. <? ?> instead of <?php ?>)

Re: Need help with moving website to new server.

I've started to use Godaddy and enjoy their hosting. I also have a business e-commerce website setup with Jumpline using their VDS package, but that is generally overkill.

Transferring shouldn't be too hard, but as poker mentioned there could be issues on the software side of any change. Is your website run on a custom application or something like Joomlya which could be updated relatively easilty?

Re: Need help with moving website to new server.

Well I still have a free 1&1 webspace that I hardly use. If you have nothing that is too sensitive I could upload it on there first to see if it works.

EDIT: I just checked and 1&1 is running PHP version 5.1.4 with register globals off and short tags on if that helps any.

Re: Need help with moving website to new server.

Does your current host use cPanel? Do any of your future hosts use cPanel?

If both are using cPanel (VERY common control panel software for webhosts), then it would be a rather simple matter of downloading the backups from the current host and restoring them on the new host. Only hiccup would be if the path to your home directory varies -- can overcome that by talking with your future host before you sign up. Just ask the new host with help transferring the site -- most will be quite helpful. FWIW, it looks like LiquidWeb uses cPanel..

Check WebHostingTalk for reviews and possible deals from hosts. Great site!

Thanks guys .... yes Perry .. my current host uses CPANEL. ( Web Hosting by iPowerWeb )
Thing is, I am very illiterate when it comes to all this, which is why I asked if someone was willing to help with the move.

If someone is willing to help with the actual moving, I would appreciate it and would be willing to offer some money for the help.

Re: Need help with moving website to new server.

I'd almost say to ask the new host if they'll help you. cPanel will make it pretty easy to set things up. I'd offer as I'm pretty comfortable working inside webhosts, etc, but I'm not sure how much time I'll have between now and then. Especially as we get in to September.
