  • Killer NIC

Is this network interface card that good that it's worth $280? I'm just curious if the technology actually gives any real improvement to games at all. Someone buy one and tell us. :)

Don't know man but at $280, I would like to see more 3rd party testing before I will believe it is really worth the price. I am not sure how would a network card will give you better frame rate.....

      ^^More info on the NIC.
For $279 I think people should just upgrade there internet connection, MB or CPU.

Pure snake oil, IMHO. I could see some of the stuff about it to be marginally beneficial, although probably more for pure benchmarking than anything you'd notice in actual gameplay. And no way it's worth $280.

            Re: Killer NIC

If you have a gigabit connection and if you are able to transfer at max, you could see as much as 20% of your cpu utilized. This card promises to take that down to 5%. But I have never seen any game that takes that much bandwidth on the gamers side so I would say this kind of nic would be better suited on the serverside.

Um buy more RAM instead and reap the benefits on all of your other apps as well.

                This thing is something else.
Apparently it was just a rumor not too long ago.
$279 is a pile of cash but this thing has some really awesome stuff: Completely bypasses the Windows stack, on-board Linux, 64MB RAM.

This one is on my maybe list next to the PhysX card.

And how does it pass the data on to your game client ?

                        Re: Killer NIC

Interesting reviews. I was just wondering if the hype matched the reality. If people can spend $100's of dollars on sound cards and video cards to offload the work from the CPU, I guess doing the same for the network card isnt any different.

Anandtech's review of the card is actually a pretty good review. Seems like a lot of snake oil.

                              IMHO:

                              - Processing a game's network traffic is hardly the most CPU intensive part of gaming.

                              - With all of the possible network elements between the client and the server, I have a hard time believing that your NIC would make much of a difference in «ping stability».

                              - I would rather spend the money on a better processor or video card.
