  • PC won't shut down completely

For some reason, my PC won't shut down completely after windows closes out. I'll hit start, shutdown, then the windows is shutting down msg, then a black screen, but my tower won't turn off. Lights from the fans stay on, power to the fans keep it spinning, and I have to manually shut it off from my power button on the case. What gives?

Sounds like a PSU problem. What PSU do you have?

        Did it ever auto shutoff?

Run AV, spyware, defrag, etc. on the harddrive. Make sure it's not being caused by Windows before assuming it's a hardware problem. I've had several PC's bogged down so hard they wouldn't power off.

            Check this first. http://aumha.org/win5/a/shtdwnxp.htm
It definitely may be software issue and we'll work on it, but I have seen this problem three times before and the PSU was the culprit. Also check the ACPI in the BIOS. Is the PSU still running at full or does it seem like it's at half power when its hanging and your LED fans are they fully bright or dim when its hanging?

Re: PC won't shut down completely

I haven't checked your link yet troublesome, but to answer some ??'s

Bhack- Yeah it's pretty random. Somedays it'll shut off w/o a prob. More recently it seems to hang up, but not everytime.

Troublesome--i have no idea what ACPI in the BIOS is, but I'll look into it when I get home from work. As for full power, yeah it seems like the fans are the same brightness and spinning fully.

              Thanks guys.

That's not a solution for powering down electronics that I would ever recommend, for various reasons.

Flipping the PSU power switch would be a safer alternative to unplugging it, though I don't favor doing that either.

If this is a random problem then I think it is software.

I know, but the absence of a j/k or a smiley face in the post may have led somebody to take you seriously.

Re: PC won't shut down completely

It's definitely a weird problem that I couldn't fix. I've been to the link that trouble posted and the solutions there didn't work for me. It's even occured with the new PC I just build but not as often as before. I do notice that it's more prone to occur if the PC has been running for a long time (>day).

Yeah it's a bit weird. It definitely seems to be random, and I don't normally leave my pc on for more than a day so I'm guessing it's software related. I do notice however, that it tends to happen more when I turn off my monitor before the pc shuts down.

It's probably safe to just hit the power button after windows has closed out ain't it?
