  • P4 3.0 or AMD Athlon64 3200+?

I'm looking at new computers and these are the two processors that I am considering. What do the people who spend far more time at this than I do think of the P4 vs Athlon64?

Looking for gaming power, not video editing type stuff.

Just got finished reading tons of reviews and benchmark tests.

If it's gaming you want, the Athlon64 is the CPU to choose...

Just bought a new system: AMD Athlon64 3200+/1 Gig RAM.

Ships with a PoS video card GF4 64 MB, but I plan on getting a ATI Radeon 9800 Pro card, rather than pay the big premium to have them put it in themselves. (About 60% more expensive if they do it)

Looking forward to getting this baby going.

          Hello All!

I wanted to buy an Intel P4 3Ghz. But I am also a big gamer.

So I redecided to an AMD A64 3200+.

But I also want a low noise system.

          So my questions:

          1. Which one gets hotter?
          2. Can I oc the A64 3200+?

P4 3ghz will be hotter than the A64

You'd be a idiot to buy Intel CPU's right now, unless you do video editing........

Overclocking the A64 3200....hmm well if you have a VIA board (which are better) like the K8VSE deluxe, you will get about 230fsb out of it (10x230 = A64 3500ish) If you get a Nforce3 150 board you might get a much higher overclock, but Nforce3 150s suck.....

VIA's new chipset will be out soon and so will Nforce3's 250 chipset.. Both are going to be much better for overclocking........

                Re: P4 3.0 or AMD Athlon64 3200+?

Most the time I play games, but I also do some video editing and encoding stuff.

I don't want to oc the A64 much, but I heard, some extra mhz would accelarate the cpu to really high levels. Even just 8% more and a A64 3200+ is faster than a P4 3,4Ghz.

                And so on...

So you would say I should buy the A64. And which Motherboard? Whats the best A64 Mobo at the moment? It must be stable, compatible with TwinMos Ram, must have USB 2.0 and dual memory support.

an A64 3200 is faster than a P4 3.4 in most cases anyway.....

OK guy, now you really got me going! Now I really start to hate P4.

                    A64 3200+ faster than a P4 3,4Ghz without any oc'n?

A64, here I come! But still one question: which Mobo is the best?
