  • Do i need to upgrade modem?

Hullo smart kids....was wondering...i've had the same cable modem since i first got high speed access....that was 5 years ago, would a newer modem improve my connection speeds?

    Thanks.

Re: Do i need to upgrade modem?

I've had the same cable modem for 3+ years now, and I have no intention of upgrading. To my knowledge (which isn't top notch, but usable), all cable modems really do is convert the signal from the wall coax to something usable by your computer over cat5 and back again. The only limiting factor would be how your modem's speed compares to your provider's speed. If your gear is only capable of say 1mbps but your company gives you a 4mbps pipeline, you might want to upgrade depending on what you use your connection most for.

In my case, I'm mostly gaming, so I don't need a super-huge pipeline all the time. If you're downloading files a lot, you might want to make sure your modem can handle the maximum amount of bandwith that your ISP can give you. In terms of raw speed (ping out and back), your modem won't really do much as far as I know; it'll be dependent upon how much bandwith is taken up by neighbors in your area.

Anyone else with more knowledge, feel free to clarify/correct.

Thanks for the reply Tarpan, i appreciate the info. My only concern was gaming, so i guess my modem is fine as is.

In general, a new modem won't improve your connection any, but a bad modem will degrade it. So if you're having issues you might look into replacing it, otherwise I probably wouldn't even bother.

Yeah. In gaming, you're sending small amounts of info back and forth, and what matters is how fast they get from A->B->A again. If your speeds (pings) are slow, chances are it's on your ISP's end and not you. If everyone in your neighborhood is downloading a huge porn flick at once, network traffic will be congested to the point that you can't even browse CNN, much less play games.

Now, there are tweaks in some games (such as CS) that allow you to control the rates at which your computer sends and receives data. These can be fussed with to eek out more performance by matching them to what your connection can handle (default rates are usually lower than what you can handle), but it's all client-side software issues.

Re: Do i need to upgrade modem?

IF your modem is compliant with the DOCIS specifications (think it is 2) your modem is fine because it will work up to the speeds of 45 mbps down max and 15 mbps up max (it has been a while since I have had to look up the info I could be wrong).

If you are experiencing problems with your internet and you are sure it is on the cable end of it call up your ISP and they can run some basic tests to see if it is a problem in the fiber or the coax to your house, remember if there is a problem make sure they fix it fast because your only responsible for the cable once it enters your house the rest of it is theirs.
