  • Can i delete my "temp" files?

Apparently my C drive which has approximately 7.8 GB capacity now has about 30 MB worth of space left. I cant even install the BF2 patch with that amount of space, let alone defragment. Looking through that drive to see which folders were hogging all the space, i noticed a hidden folder at this address:

    C:\Documents and Settings\Kevin\Local Settings

That local settings folder then has a folder inside of it called "temp" and it has 1.22 GB worth of crap in it. On another of my XP accounts theres another "temp" folder with a little over 1 GB worth of stuff on it.

So my question is, can i simply delete all of the files inside the "temp" folder? Only some files? Or will doing any of that cause my computer to explode?

I'm glad you asked that Santa I was wondering the same thing, I was also unable to dl the new patch so I just ended up uninstalling all my games except for BF and CSS being the 2 that I mainly play...uninstalling Flight Simulator X free'd up a lot of space:FsX is a HUGE game, so big it took 45minutes just to uninstall all the files!!

other than those temp folders, defrag and disk clean-up; if anyone else has any suggestions as to helping clean and maintain please post. I don;t know much about computer maitnance and find myself often too scared to mess anything up or delete something very vital! Good post Santa, I'm sure you and I aren't the only ones out in the dark on this one!

AFAIK it's fine to delete anything in the temp folder that's more than a month old. At least, that's what I do (I read it somewhere) and I have no problems with it. I once deleted the whole thing, including recent files, and had problems.

The short answer is yes. The folder is designed for "temporary" files. Sometimes installers extract files there before doing a setup.

If it were me, I would just take a quick look at the stuff there to make sure that *I* didn't extract something there and forget about it.

Another useful trick for freeing up space is to do a search on your drive for all files, and specify a size of "at least 10000 KB". Then sort that list in order by size and start picking off the largest ones first.

I was helping a friend free space, and we found that the MS anti-spyware tool had created a monstrous logfile. Watch for junk like that.

Edit: I should add... remove the largest files AFTER YOU IDENTIFY THEM AS USELESS. I don't want to be responsible for someone deleting the main files of their BF2 install.

Or, get a new hard drive, dude. Christmas is coming up, and I suppose old Saint Nick (err... Kevin?) could treat himself to a juicy new HD. You could easily quadruple your current capacity (7.8 gigs?!) without breaking the bank.

Hot damn, between deleting temp files and doing that search thing Icky said, i now have 2 GB of free space.

Penguin, for whatever reason when my brother set up this computer he put most of the windows stuff on the C drive and everything else on the larger D drive. D has 50 GB. Still should go bigger like you said though.

7.8 gig capacity? Perhaps you should ask your parents...errr Santa Claus....errr yourself for a bigger hard drive for Christmas. We'll help you out in the meantime Kevin.

I'm surprised nobody has suggested this yet: Delete some of your porn ;)

If you're desperate for more storage, try compressing the drive. It'll reduce hard drive performance by a lot, though.
