  • Trying to set up VPN so I can use Remote Desktop

So, I've downloaded and installed OpenVPN (GUI) on both the client and server. I think I've set up a good simple config file, but the server is getting an error about HMAC authentication failing. (I would post the exact error, but my wife is on the server side and we gave up on trying to get it to work today and I didn't write it down.) Is anyone here familiar enough with this program to give me any pointers?

My client config file is this, with the server IP address changed to zeroes:

    Code:
    remote 000.000.000.000
    dev tun
    ifconfig 10.8.0.1 10.8.0.2
    secret static.key
    keepalive 10 60
    ping-timer-rem
    persist-tun
    persist-key
The server config file is the same, but without the first line.

I used OpenVPN to create a static key and emailed it to her and the application is seeing the key on both ends.

The server is not behind a router, the client is. I've forwarded the default port properly on my (client) end.

I am running ZoneAlarm on the client end, but it's supposed to be letting OpenVPN through now.

    I'm stumped.

Have you tried hamachi? I don't know whether its as secure as OpenVPN, but its much easier to configure and get connected. Especially when you're trying to talk a nontechnical person through the steps.

I've used Hamachi for playing Starcraft. Would that work for Remote Desktop?

Here's the thread about using Remote Desktop with hamachi from the www.hamachi.cc front page:

I reckon that would suit your needs without any extra software.

I have a PPTP connection setup on mom's computer that allows her to connect to my router (Linksys WRT54G running a 3rd party firmware that has a PPTP server). Then I can use VNC on either of my computers (running Linux most of the time) to remote control hers and help her with whatever problem.
