  • Best Online (free) email.

About a month ago I finally got a gMail account and I was pretty excited. I figure that it would blow all the others away. I have a hotmail (live), yahoo and gMail.

Well, yahoo is still the best in my opinion for email. GMail might be have bunches of neat'o features but I don't see them.

Plus yahoo is so easy that my wife had no problem picking it up fast. Actually I think it (and even Live mail for that matter) make GMail look kinda primitive.

The reason for this post is I am going to set up my mom with a new email account and it has to be easy to use. Also has to be web based.

Any body know of one better than Yahoo!?

I consider Yahoo! to be the best, and I've tried (and still use) several.

I like Yahoo the best as well. But in terms of spam filtration, MSN/Hotmail is the best I've found.

That is a very important thing for my mother. She has a problem of "click anything and everything" syndrome.

          Really?

          I mean... really?

My hotmail account is spamtastic, whereas spam has to fight to get through gmail's filters. Hotmail also catches WAY more non-spam in its spam bucket than gmail ever has for me.

Maybe my experience is unique. :-/

Agreed. Virtually no spam, quick, and easy to use for me. Yahoo comes in a very close 2nd, but I get a ton of spam even after I mark em as such.

i prefer gmail due to the speed of the interface on crappy computers.

                      Re: Best Online (free) email.

I don't know, I think the anti-spam stuff on Hotmail is pretty good.

I have had my hotmail account forever. At least since 1999. Actually I believe I am using the same one I created on hotmail before Microsoft bought Hotmail. It is used 99% of times for all the sites I must register at. I use it for all my on line shopping, on line bill payment, magazine subscriptions etc.

My daughter uses it so it is used on all the site she visits and registers at. And those are some very spam oriented sites.

It was used in my single days on all the porn sites I DID NOT visit.

Considering this I get about 1 true spam e-mail a week.

I get about half that amount on GMail. But I have only had GMail for about 1 month and only used it for a half dozen things like some blogs and one shopping transaction.

For all you saying GMail is easier to use than Yahoo! you either...

                      1. Have already learned GMail so are simply "used" to GMail.
                      -OR-
                      2. Have not used the new Yahoo! mail client. It is good. I mean really good. I was supprised on how good it was. It is just as good as the Outlook web client. (The first AJAX type app in the world as far as I know.) I mean this thing has drag and drop. Shift click and Control Click for extended item selection. AN OPTIONAL reading pane. Simple sorting of messages with a simple click of the column header.

I am not saying GMail is bad. Far from it. In fact GMail forced Hotmail and Yahoo! to improve their stuff. And I do like the concept of labels vs folders.

But still, Yahoo! mail is pretty amazing.

                        Re: Best Online (free) email.

My hotmail account is filled with spam. So is my yahoo account. I'm talking hundreds of spam messages a day on both of them.

My gmail account gets about 1 spam message a month.

Gmail is faster, has a bigger mailbox, lets you find old messages quicker, and has a more intuitive interface.

It's a no-brainer in my opinion. I think you would have to be quite biased to seriously consider either yahoo or hotmail over gmail. ESPECIALLY if you're talking about your first email address and are not having to consider the inconvenience of switching from a well established email account.

Good point! Gmail's only advertisements are targeted, text-only, and usually relevant because they're based on Google's AdSense tech.

Love gmail, simple html downloads makes it easier on bad connections and the pop3 use inside Outlook makes my usage even better.. And no downloading all these yahoo ads and stupid images.. I want Inbox Sent and trash not pictures everywhere and buttons.. Gmail FTW
