  • Is this site 'safe'?

My parents are really (understandably) worried about putting credit details on the web, so I'm checking to see if anyone knows this site (this is not advertising)

    www.pcspecialist.co.uk

basically I'm asking if it's legitimate and not a big scam.

    cheers.

I've never seen this site before (since I'm in the US, it doesn't really apply). I did notice that the page where you enter your credit card information is a secure site (https://) so I'd say it is probably fine. Might want to see if anyone else has ordered from them before though. :)

https means nothing. It just means the data going from your computer to their server is encrypted. That doesn't mean they won't use that information for other purposes. This is a common misconception.

This is a good site for various comparisons or online retailers and products:
      http://www.ciao.co.uk/www_pcspecialist_co_uk__6267622

This particular site has a 2/5 rating. I haven't read the reviews, but that probably means stay clear and go somewhere else.

Two sites I recommend are eBuyer and dabs.com. dabs.com is quick on delivery and generally has low prices. eBuyer can be as quick or as slow as you like, I usually go for free delivery which takes about a week. The returns facility is good, I have used it twice and while a little slow, I got my replacements. Customer service via phone is good too, don't bother with the email customer service though, you're not likely to get a reply, especially a swift one. Call centres are in the UK and fairly quick to answer. Overall a good experience. I have only used dabs a couple of times and haven't used their customer service or return anything.

HTTPS used to mean something more, but now they're giving SSL certificates away to just about everyone.

Would it be possible for you to setup a temporary paypal credit card.
So you can just put the amount you want onto that temp card to make your purchase. Even a reliable site can me undermined through negligence or intentional subversion. I believe that with paypal you may have some recourse to get your money back if you are scammed.

If you are looking for some additional security you might be able to get a security key added to your paypal account.

Thing is, I'm too young to own a credit card, so I can't use paypal. That's why I'm asking my parents (unless any of you guys want to pay?:icon19:)

You don't need a credit card to use PayPal. You just need a valid banking account (unless PayPal doesn't support your country/country's banks).

That site looks new. I'd wait until someone has done a legit/authoritarian review on it first before shopping there.
