I am not sure if that 8500GT is better than my X800GTO. Anyone?

If it's an 8000 series, (and even if it is some cheesy proprietary Gateway build), it'll be more than enough for your needs on counter-strike.

It's a bit late so I can't be bothered to actually link you to them, but tomshardware.com puts out VGA tables regularly that you can search and compare. Might want to check that out to get some actual tested variables. A lot better than hearsay anyway.

Overall that seems like a pretty decent setup, save the fact that it's some boxed Gateway. Just don't skimp on the warranty and all you'll have to worry about is downtime from some crap part they put in from the lowest supply bidder.

      1) Add the cost of an operating system, since that doesn't come with an operating system.
      2) It's really weak on expansion slots, though thanks to the USB cult that's not uncommon.
      3) Slow memory is slow. Fortunately, slow memory is not an issue in Source games.
      4) You couldn't do better at the price by building?

The ethernet port on that machine is only a 10/100mb, which will affect performance if you do any sort of local backups or file transfers. Almost all new machines these days come with gigabit ethernet (10/100/1000mb), but not having it wouldn't affect internet speeds.

If copying all the porn in the world across an in-house LAN as fast as possible is such a big deal, buy a Gig card for $24 and put it in.

I sincerely doubt that he has any gigabit ethernet equipment at his disposal to begin with, and a gigabit card is pretty cheap. 100Mbps isn't that bad, either. I stream DVDs over my network all the time.

I would indeed strongly recommend building your own computer, and I'll endorse http://www.newegg.com/ for quality service and decent prices.

This post would probably do better in the Hardware forum, unless you wanted to specifically discuss this purchase as it relates to CounterStrike...

                  Thread moved.

And guys, it's a little late for him to build his own, he already bought this. But I am in the market for a new PC and I was considering buying one, I just want to finance it and I don't have a credit card.
