  • Free AntiVirus Software?

Is anyone running any reliable "free" antivirus programs for the home?

I have a friend who doesn't wanna pony up for Norton or MacAfee.

    thanks

avg is free for home use

    http://www.grisoft.com or directly http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php

I use it on every computer I own. It does not get in the way like norton, macafee, or pccillin. It just works, and there are weekly virus definition updates.

all the other "free" ones are evaluations, subscription based, not for windows, or just dont do the job across the board.

I too can vouch for AVG. I used it for a long time with very good results.

I'm presently using something called 'avast!', which is also free. I've only had it a few days and know little about it. I only installed it to learn about it and can't yet speak in favor of it or otherwise.

I have heard of it and have heard good things. there is also anti-vir.... http://www.free-av.com/ and fprot. fprot is "free," but it is hard to find. here's the link: http://www.f-prot.com/download/home_user/

now it is "29.00" for a home license but it covers every computer in your house for that price, regardless of how many you have. the dos scanner is free, and I suggest everyone grab it and put it on a boot floppy/cd for when a virus is really stickyand making windows unusable.

here's a good list for you:

          Re: Free AntiVirus Software?

I'm a computer tech, and whenever I have a customer who doesn't want to pay for norton, we install avast on it, and I've never had any complaints (been doing this for almost a year now I think).

I haven't used AVG for a long time, but when I did I didn't care for it. Between the two, I'd use avast.

Yeah, I've never used it, but I've heard nothing but good things about AVG.
