  • Latest and greatest

Ok I have to admit I've been out of the game for a good six months but it's upgrade time again, the old beast isn't handling the latest games like it should.

I really do have no clue so can somebody give me a brief overview of the current component market, graphics card, mainboard and cpu i'm talking here.

Budget isn't specific so all ranges please, I know it's a lot to ask but I would really appreciate it.

I just gave vinzalf some advice in this thread:

    http://www.tacticalgamer.com/showthread.php?t=11181

there is a lot of suggestions in there on mobo cpu, hard drive, and memory. go for a radeon 9800 pro (dont bother for the xt, it only gives 5-7 fps more and the extra $$$ is not worth it in this price range.) or the x800xt. the x800xt will cost you as much as all the other components, but you will get 2 to 3 years of future proofing from it.

dont let speed be your guide.... the 3200+ athlon is a 2.2 ghz chip, and compares nicely to a 3.2 ghz intel.

And the Athlon XP 2500+ Barton EASILY overclocks to 2.2GHz and is half the price of the 3200+. :)

but the noise and/or size turn me off..... if they could get it the same as the ati.... I would consider it, but ati still has an all around better product right now.

noise was only a problem with FX family cards, which was taken care off later on. The size, yeah i think they still use the adjacent PCI slot.

oh yeah and you're right about the speed, 9500 pro owns 9600 pro, even thought 9500pro is 125mhz slower.

actually NVidia is ahead or the same, according to all the benchmarks, except one i think heh

                          Re: Latest and greatest

nvidia might be *SLIGHTLY* faster in like just doom3, but its a big, bulky powermad, hot and loud card, compaired to ATI's compact design. and the 6800s reference design uses 1.5 slots...you cant use the slot under it, but u can use the backing plate for extra usb ports etc, which are included with many motherboards these days. I think the Asus has a single slot design though

the 6800 non ultra would be a better buy than a 9800 or 9800xt though. and only a couple of $$$ more.
