  • TR's February 2008 system guide

When I was about to build my 1st system, this regularly updated Tech Report article on building a rig at different price points was very helpful, so I am pass it on to all the people here at TG.

    http://techreport.com/articles.x/14225

That link is for the newest one for the month of Feb.

It looks at building a decent system as cheap as $600 and goes up from there.

It also talks a good bit about which OS to buy, like OEM vs. Retail Box, and 32 bit vs 64, and has a link to their guide on how to put it all together.

    Hope folks find it useful........................

Great stuff, especially the OS part. I'm still leaning to XP 64 right now, but we'll see.

While on the subject of build guides, here is a bang for buck guide to Graf. cards.
The Best Gaming Graphics Cards for the Money: March 2008

Also in graf. news, ATI's new 8.3 drivers are out today, and they are supposed to be pretty good.

"New ATI Catalyst Drivers [March 05, 2008, 4:13 pm ET] - Post a Comment
The ATI Drivers & Software now features the promised release of new version 8.3 Catalyst reference drivers for ATI graphics cards. These release notes outline the changes, the most significant of which, such as quad Crossfire support, were detailed yesterday (story). The drivers also offer performance increases for several games, and clear up a number of issues under Windows Vista."

Here are 2 articles about the drivers:

Couple of new guides just posted that I think a lot of people will find helpful:

Ars System Guide: Spring forward and build a new, badass rig
Don't let the title scare you. There are links to all different levels of builds in the article.

Building The Ultimate Budget Gaming PC
Lots of good info in that one for people on a budget, of just looking for a good upgrade.
They build a complete system including LCD for $900, but offer lots of options if you want to add like $20 here, or a little more here, etc.
