  • Crash to Desktop (BF2142)

My game is now crashing to my desktop before (for those of you who know) the walker even shows up. This happened once before because my graphics card wasn't good enough, and I got a new one. Now it's happenening again. Before it happened though, I was alt tabbed out of the game (in the main screen and disconnected from any server)and watching some videos. Then my whole computer slowed up a lot. I ended up having to ctrl alt del out of the game because I thought that it was slowing things down, but it ended up being the site. I then uninstalled and reinstalled the game and that didn't help out at all either.

Any thoughts on what could be happening now?

Now I'm getting a message when I try to play CoD4.
    The message is: Error during initialization: Create2DTexture( $shadowmap_sun, 1024, 2048, 0, 75 ) failed: 8876017c = Out of video memory

      What are your PC specs?

Can you also tell us which graphics card you are using?

It's hard to help you out without the above information.

I'm running Windows XP and my graphics card is a GeForce 6800

The game is now getting all the way to the main menu (after you sign in under your soldier name), but crashes there. I think this may be something that is being fixed itself. My computer did the same thing with corrupt directX files and before when something went wrong with the graphics card.

are you overclocked?? and what is the resolution you are trying to play at vs your natural resolution?

I play at 1024x780 and thats my natural resolution. I have no idea what you mean by overclocked though. Explain?

Well if you don't know what it means, then you probably did not do it..:icon26: It is a process of boosing your factory specs to increase fps..etc etc etc.

Did this start to happen all of a sudden? Did you uninstall the game and then re-install before all of this happened? Or did it just happen out of the blue...??

What other graphic intensive games can you currently run now?

Have you tried dusting out your system internals and graphics card fan/heatsink?

I know I had similar crashes because my air intake vents on my case was clogged.

This just happened out of the blue.
I've also got CoD4 installed on my computer, but that seems to be working perfectly fine.
It seems that the game has started to also stop remembering my password. I can log in and click it once, but the next time I go back it's gone.

Hmm, look on the Steam forums for the help announcement post that tells you how to clean out your preferences file. That should solve your crash issues along with STEAM forgetting your password.

Edit: Here are two other "help" announcements from the Steam forums' Help and Tips section:
