  • XP SP3 causing errors on AMD machines

Beware SP3 if you have an AMD box with HP OEM drivers: Story.

Windows XP service pack 3 is causing some users' PCs to enter an endless reboot cycle, and the issue appears to be limited to OEM images from Hewlett Packard (NYSE:HPQ) deployed on AMD (NYSE:AMD)-based PCs.

In a Thursday blog post, Jesper Johansson, a former senior security strategist at Microsoft (NSDQ:MSFT) and current Microsoft MVP, says the problem stems from the intelppm.sys driver that HP and other OEMs include in the image for both Intel and AMD-based machines.
I never installed SP3 because I suspected there might be problems such as this, and I'm glad I didn't now.

He won it by making the other poor dumb bastard die for his country."

I have been running it for over a week on my old rig, and no problems so far. But that one is an intel/Gateway.
