  • Can't delete files

I set up a brand new HD with OS and all, then copied my old drives data to a folder so i could wipe the previous drive clean. While picking through and deleting all the stuff I didn't want to keep, I came across two files that won't go away...

    C:\OLD SATA\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Flash
    Flasutil9f
    flash9f

I don't recall the original extension because i changed them in the hopes that it would allow me to delete them... No matter what I do I cant seem to get rid of em. These files should not have any bearing on my os and should not be relied on for anything since they were simply copied over whole sale from my old drive into a folder called 'OLD SATA' as you can see above.

Since nothing from this copied drive is actually functioning with the OS im confused as to why it wont let me just wipe it. The access restrictions are read only, and every time i try to change it, no dice. Safe mode no different... hijack this delete on reboot utility has failed as well.

    Any thoughts?

Can you kill it with DOS via CMD, or perhaps via Linux?

Also, did you run scandisk? Perhaps there's a problem with the file table.

Access denied with CMD... i haven't booted straight to dos though, I'd try that but I have no boot disk handy.

Haven't run scan disk... no other problems with any files or processes or instability, etc etc, so I assumed that much was fine.

check the task manager if those files are running... If they aint... a good ol' formatting would do the trick =)

So you can rename them but dont delete them?

What does an "attrib" on the command line return for the file?
            On cmd type:
            Code:
            c:
            cd "C:\OLD SATA\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Flash"
            attrib

Its a fresh hd with a fresh os install, i dont want to wipe the drive because of 2 copied files that don't want to go away :(

Will try the cmd attrib when I get home from work.

Wild guess here but try booting up in safe mode and deleting them.

If it's NTFS, there are access controls that can't be seen with the attrib command. You might need to switch to the view that lets you see the ACLs. (I think that's the "simple file sharing" checkbox in Internet Settings, but not sure.) Then you can "take ownership" of the files. I'll bet something else owns them, and even Administrator can't delete a file if it's owned by another user and an ACL locks the admin out. The only thing Admin can do in that situation is to take ownership.

                    Re: Can't delete files

I also suspect something more sinister than a simple attribute going on here.
What happens if you right-click in Explorer, select Properties/Security. Do you see any "Deny" checkboxes active there when selecting your (or any other) user? Maybe some unknown user, that existed on the old system, has messed up privileges set there.

Uncheck all "Deny" checkboxes you can find and if needed add your user with "Full Access" to the files in question.
