  • New laptop help

OK... my old laptop died when I dropped it dodging my daughter as she grabbed my legs.
    SOOOOOO

    I'm getting a new one.
I want a CHEAP ONE. It will be for
    a) writing
    b) a tiny bit of surfing
    c) older, cheaper games (I have a lot of those)

The last one (the one that died) was $500 on a day after thanksgiving day sale.

    Here is my question(s):
Since they all come with vista now, what processer/ram do I need for it to run decently?
I was thinking about getting this one.
Toshiba Satellite A205-S5841 15.4" Laptop (1.73 GHz Intel Pentium Dual Core T2370 Processor, 2 GB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, DVD Drive, Vista Premium)

also, it has this for graphics:
Intel GMA X3100 graphics (up to 256 MB of available memory)

I believe that this isn't any real 3d graphics package card, so I'd still be doing the older games that don't require 3d cards?

    Any suggestions/help?

    Re: New laptop help

Check out the Dell Vostro small business line of laptops, they have pretty good specs on them and are in the price range that you're looking at

Here's an older link, but gives you an idea:

    http://www.dealsea.com/forums/viewto...ghlight=vostro

Processor isn't as important as RAM to run Vista. I'd say that a minimum is 2 gigs, but the more the better. Especially since you're looking at an integrated graphics card which will use system RAM.

if you want a cheap laptop, go to dell's outlet and look for an inspiron 1525. I just bought 6 and not one of them was over 530.00
      the most expensive had a c2d 1.6, 3gig DDR2, 160gig HDD, DVD+-RW, built in webcam, 1440x900 LCD and BT. 530.00

There is no choice on the video - intel x3100, but it does have hdmi out. you could also spend some $$$ and get BluRay installed as well.
just be careful of the color, or you might wind up with a hot pink computer.
if you want more options, the 1520 in refurbs is also a great computer, and you can get an Nvidia 8400gt in it.

pm me if you want some more specific buying advice on Dell laptops.

What about one of those ultra-cheap sub-notebooks that have been in the news lately? Like the ones being pushed for 3rd world deployment?

Dell is actually about to release a sub-note book that has engadget, gizmodo, and other sites all excited.

            That looks interesting.

Also, on the notebook subject, and I don't want to start another full thread, for those interested in a great cheap gaming notebook, Gateway actually has some out right now that have been getting good reviews.
            Here is the 17 in.
            http://www.hothardware.com/Articles/...ming_Notebook/

Bestbuy has had it on sale for $1,099, and they had the 15in. one for $899. I have another review link somewhere if anyone else is interested. Only thing I don't really like is the kind of orange color on it. In person, it is actually more copper colored by the way. I almost bought the 15 in. last month when I bought the Toshiba I ended up with (both had a lot of good reviews). The Tos was $799, and I won't be doing any gaming on it, but it still came with 4 gigs of RAM and Vista 64. I have been very happy with it, and it feels just as fast as my desktop, but haven't tried gaming on it. It is for my wife to do office work and surf the net.

                DO NOT BUY TOSHIBA!!!!

you will never find parts for it, and will never be able to sell it...

go on ebay and put in and dell laptop number.... dozens of pages of parts and full computers.... there is something to be said for having a common machine... kinda like buying a jeep wrangler or a dodge 1500.

                    Re: New laptop help

                    LOL
                    explain this to me:
                    2.0GB, DDR2-667 SDRAM, 1 DIMM [add $70]
                    4.0GB, DDR2-667 SDRAM, 2 DIMMS [add $210]

So it costs 3 times as much to get 2 of the first one? Shouldn't it be $140 or less?

Edit: I don't like the dell store, you can't have a finished computer set up and save the link except to do it on their site.. I want a link to paste somewhere. Darn them!

I always go with the least option on ram and buy 4gig from newegg. I also got the smallest HDD for my 1720, then swapped it out for 2 250's later.

Actually, I am annoyed by hot colors for some reason. I am a cool color person, like greens, blues, blacks, purples. As apposed to reds, oranges, yellows. None of my clothes are those colors, unless they are small in a grafic or something. A few years ago I worked at a summer camp and the "uniform" was baseball theamed and we all had to wear red shirts. Soon as the last kid left, I changed shirts.

Look at the picture of the laptop and tell me you think it looks good.

Also, just noticed Fry's has some good deals if you live near one cause I think they are in store specials

Front page is a Sony Vaio for $499 with no rebates. I was looking at the Dallas ad, since I know people that could pick things up for me. Check the one closer to you

                            http://www.techbargains.com/news_displayItem.cfm/126825

They have a ton of other good deals, like that Corsair XMS 4gig memory for $59. That is some good ram.

                            Edit again

Man, they have some really good deals on memory
                            http://shopping.dallasnews.com/ROP/a...vid=2519&type=
They have the same memory I have, the Corsair Dominator 1066 for $39. I paid $180 in OCT.
Tons of other good choices, espically that Crucial Balistic for $17. That is really good stuff.

There was a time when you could only buy a computer in eggshell white. Then a few "cool" vendors started making them in black cases. Now that's the "normal" laptop color.

I like to stand out from the crowd. I don't mind if it's metallic red. My favorite car color is that copper "tomato" color with matte black trim. (Although I'd avoid red, as it's a cop magnet. I'd rather blend in with the herd on the road.)

I remember as a kid some of the bigger slot car sizes used a transparent body that you'd paint from the inside to protect the paint from collisions. It would be cool if the computer shells were made this way for easy custom paint jobs.
