  • New ATI 4870 reviews

    Three new 4870 reiviews just came up, and I thought I would pass them on. Two of them are for special versions like the Anandtech review is with a 1gig memory card, and the Fudzilla is with the new Sapphire card with an aftermarket cooler (not much of a review, but I am more interested in the lower temps anyway).

    Ha..!! That is the EXACT card I got..! :) Radeon FTW..! :)

    It is so new that their "registration" program that pops up does not even offer the card as a choice to register!! hahahah

      Re: New ATI 4870 reviews

      I don't have a small enough philips screwdriver to take the heatsink off and reseat it with better thermal goo. I'll probably do it after I move, but for now, I use a fan control utility.

      I was about to pick up the 512MB 4870, but decided on the 1GB because I plan on keeping the card for at least the next 2 years. I'm glad to see that this time I didn't go wrong.

        If you find a fan controller for it..please let me know..Catalyst 8.9 does not have any fan control that I can find..

          Crap, I missed the shot with that card compared to the 260. What a difference in size!

            The guy in the Toxic write-up says he can use Riva Tuner..

            I tried, but Riva Tuner didn't see anything on my system..

            WTH did I do wrong here..?

                If you are running 32 bit windows ATI tray tools works for fan control. If not, you can use Rivatuner, or you can manually edit your Catalyst profile. Just make sure you save a profile with Overdrive unlocked (you can leave it off, just unlock it) and make sure the Overdrive box is checked in the profile menu when you save it. Then find it at your %appdata%/local/ATI/ACE/Profiles/ and edit it to look like this

                <Feature name="FanSpeedProtocol_0">
                <Property name="FanSpeedProtocolProperty" value="Percent" />
                </Feature>
                <Feature name="FanSpeedAlgorithm_0">
                <Property name="FanSpeedAlgorithm" value="Manual" />
                </Feature>
                <Feature name="FanSpeedRPMTarget_0">
                <Property name="Want" value="0" />
                </Feature>
                <Feature name="FanSpeedPercentTarget_0">
                <Property name="Want" value="33" />

                I put 33% for the fanspeed percent target but you can put whatever you feel is necessary. At 33% my card stays around 50c, and never ever goes above 60, even in a fairly warm room. Personally I like to manually edit it. I liked ATI Tray Tools but 64-bit vista doesn't like its unsigned drivers.

                  Yeah..I got the 4870 in a Ulty 64-bit box..

                  I am a complete Vista Noob..I would not even know where to go to try and edit that..

                      RivaTuner is old as the hills....

                      I found the utility I use... Gainward ExperTool
                      http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads...0_for_ATI.html

                      Works awesome and 100% compat with the card. You set it, and it'll be persistent until you change it, even through reboots. Autosaves it's own internal config.

                          My only regret is that I didn't hold out for the 1GB version.

                              I saw that Newegg had the 2 different ones and only like $30 more..so I figured it would be worth it..

                              I am thinking that I may be a ATI fan from now on..even looking at just the desktop, everything is very clear and bright..just really is an improvement over what I see, even through a DVI connection on my other boxes that all have 8800gt's..
