  • Radeon 4870 or 4870x2

    Does anyone have a 4870x2.

I have read alot about the 4870 and I am ready to get one.

But, now I am seeing this 4870x2 that is about $250 more than a 4870 with 1GB.

    Is it worth it?

    Re: Radeon 4870 or 4870x2

The 4870X2 is for all intent and purposes, two 4870s. Is that 4870X2 a 1GB or 2GB card? As it would then split into 4870 512MB x2 or 1GB x2. It's been mentioned a couple of times in other 4870x2-related threads, so I'll post the reminder :)

The 4870x2 is simply two 4870s on one card, Crossfire'd internally. You'd get nearly identical performance with two separate 4870 cards in Crossfire on a PCI-E 2.0 board. So if you can/want to foot the cash on the X2, and/or you planned on a dual 4870 configuration anyhow, it's cheaper than buying two separate 4870 cards.

It's also good if you're planning on dropping insane cash on a pair of 4870x2s for the purpose of Quad-Crossfire.

Lastly, it depends on what games you're playing, as well. Some games scale much better than others, in Crossfire.

What resolution do you game at beaker?

Even a 512mb 4870 will rock at 1680x1050 in most games, if you can find a 1gb like Birdie for a good price it's an even better card.

The X2 is allot of card, you won't see the advantages of it unless you play at a higer res. Not that it would be a bad choice but you just won't see the extra performance your paying for in most games (again dependant on res.)

          I game at 1680x1050 on a Samsung 22" LCD.

          Sounds like I'll go with a 4870 1GB.

Birdie, I'll trade you my 8800GT for it :)

Procolor makes a slightly overclocked 1GB with better cooling for the same price as that Diamond.

            3) Support game play in a near-simulation environment. Where the focus of play would not be solely on doing what it takes to win, but doing so utilizing real-world combat strategy and tactics rather than leveraging exploits provided to players by the design of the game engine.

I cant find the bloody link, but i did read somewhere that gaming with the x2 on anything less than a 24'' monitor actually drops performance?! Anyone back that up though with my missing link?

its NOT dependent on monitor size, but screen resolution... you can have a 24'' 1680x1050 and get better fps than a 19'' 1920x1200

What a crazy thread. I've been contemplating the same question the past couple of days. I also wanted to upgrade but wasn't sure which one to get. Now I game at 1920x1200 on a 26" monitor. When I'm playing The Witcher on max settings it seems the game chugs in certain areas of the game. On TigerDirect they have a Diamond 4870x2 for $450(after rebate). Is this reasonable?

Tempus is right. Here's the 1GB 4870 from PowerColor you should buy. It's slightly overclocked for the same price.
