  • Ubuntu 8.10 to arrive on Thursday

Just passing this on for folks that want to give this a try.

Ubuntu 8.10 to arrive on Thursday

I'll probably play with it some. For those that don't know, you can run this from a live CD so you don't have to actually install it. You can also run it from a Live USB thumb drive, which I'm thinking of trying this time.

Re: Ubuntu 8.10 to arrive on Thursday

I'm all set and ready to install alongside XP, but recently found out that Ubuntu doesn't naively support my RAID 0 array, so I gotta do some more fishing around when I get free time to figure out how to get that going.

I think I'll try this out after being somewhat unsatisfied by openSUSE 11.

I've been using Ubuntu for years and can recommend it. I'm currently on 8.04 LTS since it has long term support. I don't plan on checking 8.10 out, but it's probably awesome too!

I may put it on my AA1 for giggles, so long as it spills over to Kubuntu.

What did you find wrong with openSUSE?

I was going to try that myself, as we use SLES here at my office.

I'm not sure, just wasn't what I was expecting I guess, a case of the XP -> Vista hate. I'm sure its just me being unexperienced with Linux but things are tough to install. I cant just find a program I like and have it working with in a few minutes.

I'm running 8.04.1 on my EEE PC and I love it. I might upgrade to 8.10 sometime in the future but I really don't feel like doing all of the required customization to get it to work on my little netbook. Maybe I'll try it out when a customized EEE release comes out.

Shoot, I am still figuring out how to use the LiveCd in my computer without messing up my Windows?? I guess I better go read up a lot on Ubuntu before doing anything stupid.

I was actually saving these links for my next Weekend post, but they are more relevant here:

How to run Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex from a flash drive

Ubuntu tip: Use Startup Manager to edit your boot menu

Appnr: Web-based app director and installer for Ubuntu

I'm probably going to give the flash drive article a go. It is like having a LiveCD, but you can save and edit things. Considering how cheap flash drives are, it might be a good thing to just put in a safe place ready to pull out in an emergency if something goes wrong with your harddrive, so you can try and recover some important stuff.

You know the release candidate that is out now will become the final version if no major bugs are found, so you could just go ahead and download that. :D

Meaning if I auto-update it, it'll "Release Version" itself?
