What do you want to play?

    What resolution?

How long before replacing or upgrading?

    Budget?

    Please.:row__582:

Personally, i'd wait for the inevitable first price drop of the i7's (should happen sometime around march) before investing in a new build, ESPECIALLY a new high-end build right now, but that's just me.

Otherwise, if you want to move foreward, we need more details. Particularily in terms of budget and ideal operation performance.

No point in running dual video cards, really a waste of money. Buy one great card and SLI/Xfire it later as a cost-effective upgrade.

8GB of ram is probably overkill unless we're building a high-end design machine or something.

I'm going against you with the dual video cards. Dual video cards can be a good thing to go with from the start. In my case I purchased 2 GTX+ cards and am getting better performance than a GTX 280 for cheaper. There is also no problems I've had with SLI and I've tested using just one card and I get almost double FPS in some games (games I don't get almost double in don't matter as they already have insanely high fps).

Damnit Blizzard, fix ZvT already >.<

Go for the water cooling from Asetek if you have that much money.
An extra 300 for the external unit.
I did my processor first, then i just did the two video cards and 2 hard drives last week.
              Totally quiet, totally cool.
Got processor up to 4.06 an e8400 dual core.
ram up from 800 to 1081.
Video cards are at 20C all day.

I would consider waiting until the beginning of 2009 if I were you. The Core i7 should be readily available and I've been hearing some promising things about AMD's new K10.5 based Deneb chips. It might be interesting to see how both of those new CPUs stack up as far as price/performance goes before you commit to anything.

That said, if you are absolutely dead set on building right away, I would probably go with something like this:

Case: $89.98 (I'm a HUGE Lian Li fanboy so others might have a different recommendation.)
                http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811112154

                DVD drive: $23.99

                PSU: $120.00 after MIR
                http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817139002

                HDD: $74.99

                Motherboard: $99.99 after MIR
                http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131299

                GPU: $269.99 after MIR
                http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814121277

                Sound card: $89.99
                http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16829132006

                RAM: $78.00 after MIR
                http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145197

                CPU: $319.99
                http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115041

HSF: $21.99 after MIR + $8.49 for bolt-thru kit (get both. Push pins suck.)
                http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835233003
                and
                http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835233019

Thermal compound: $6.99 (performs better than AS5 and no cure time to boot.)
                http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835202006

                OS: $99.99
                http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16832116488

                Monitor: $239.99 after MIR
                http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824001268

                Total:
1544.37 after MIR and before shipping.

That leaves you a good bit left over for a nice keyboard and mouse. I have a Razer Lachesis mouse (love it) and a Lycosa keyboard (like it but wish I had bought a Logitech G15 instead.)

That is practically item for item what'd I'd recommend for a build if you were doing it right now. I personally would wait until early spring before upgrading because the new processors are going to be a new socket (and thus need a new style of motherboard) so your upgrade potential is minimal if you buy now.
