  • Need new parts!

Hey everyone. I need some assistance on some computer parts.

    I have 5gb of RAM, DDR2.
GeForce 8600 GT 256mb video card.
    I think 60W powersupply.
    Decent tower/case.
and a crappy CPU w/ Mobo combo thing.

I want to get a new Mobo (perferably Intel) and a new CPU, but I can't find anything thats good on newegg anywhere for some reason. I need to know if anyone here has some good links to some good parts that i could buy. My price range for each (CPU and Mobo) is probably 200-300 dollars. Also I might need a new Powersupply to sustain all this new equipment but i should be able to find that easy.

Thanks to whoever can help me with my search.

60w power supply wouldnt turn your HD let alone the specs you have....
that sounds like a good idea trooper.

I think he means 600W PSU.

As for parts, how much are you willing to spend Soulja?

Mm, well, I dont want the parts altogether to be toohigh, but i am willing to stretch quite a bit, but also i dont know how much these parts would cost, so i cant really give a rough estimate of how much i'd be willing to pay.

          Re: Need new parts!

Well, let's start with CPUs then and we'll go down the list to help you narrow the parts you want.

Here are some of the most popular Intel CPUs on the market right now:

          Intel Processors - Dual Core
          $160 | Core 2 Duo E8400 (3.0 GHz)
          $188 | Core 2 Duo E8500 (3.16 GHz)
          $270 |Core 2 Duo E8600 (3.33 GHz)

          Intel Processors - Quad Core
          $190 | Core 2 Quad Q6600 (2.5 GHz)
          $270 | Core 2 Quad Q9400 (2.66 GHz)

Intel Processors - Nehalem (Quad Core)
          $300 | Core i7 920 (2.66 GHz)
          $570 | Core i7 940 (2.93 GHz)

Here are some popular motherboards to go with the above CPUs:

Motherboards (these won't take the Q6600 or the Core i7s)
          $75 after MIR | MSI Neo3-F (P43, PCI-E 2.0)
          $85 after MIR | ASUS P5Q SE/R (P45, RAID, EPU, PCI-E 2.0)
          $119 | ASUS P5Q-VM (G45, PCI-E 2.0)
          $150 | ASUS P5Q3 (P45, PCI-E 2.0, full-speed SLI/Crossfire)

Motherboards (these are only for the Core i7s)
          $221 | MSI (X58, Triple-Channel DDR3 RAM)
          $259 | Intel DX58SO (X58, Triple-Channel DDR3 RAM, 2 x PCI-E x16 - no SLI/Crossfire support)

Motherboards (most of these will take the dual and quad cores listed above)
          $44 | Foxconn M7VMX-K (nForce 610i)
I used this exact same mobo in a gaming build for a friend. Works like a charm, probably limited for OCing, but a nice budget board with enough ports. This one won't take any of the listed dual cores or any of the other quad cores (will only take the Q6600 without OC'd FSB) without some FSB OCing.
          $50 | Foxconn M7PMX-S (nForce 630i)
          $70 | ASUS P5N-EM (nForce 630i, 3 x RAM slots)
          $90 | Foxconn G33M (G33, 4 RAM slots)
          $82 after MIR | ASUS P5Q-SE PLUS (P45, PCI-E 2.0, 4 x RAM slots)

Hopefully that gives you a general idea of how much you want to spend for the CPU and motherboard.

As for graphics, pricing could range from $110 to $600 for a number of nVidia or ATI graphics cards (from the 8800GT to the 4870X2).

Going to take a break. Respond with what you want to do with your rig, how much you have to spend, when you want to buy these parts, and what games you plan on playing.

how do you have 5gb? is it 2x2gb and 2x512mb? unless you have 64 bit, you cant use all that.

you can get a 3.1ghz amd with mobo
            mobo: 80 bucks
            http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131340
            cpu: 76 bucks
            http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103272
            graphics card: 160
            http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814125238

built this system for a friend a few weeks ago, the complete system was around 800 shipped from newegg, and it screams.... probably better than my 11 month old system for half the price =o (minus keyboard/mouse/monitor/operating system(we go to college together, students in my program can get any windows operating system free for life!))

5GB is an.... odd.... number, and certainly isn't going to perform as well due to not being able to dual channel that last GB.

What platform are you looking at? Intel or AMD?
