  • ATI Catalyst 8.12 driver

    ATI's new driver is supposed to be a pretty big deal, adding a lot of new functions and a big boost to FPS. The beta was just released, as well as some details about the driver:

    ATI Catalyst 8.12 Beta Released, ATI Stream Now Available

    The new stuff like video conversion look cool. Here are the boosts expected:

    Performance improvements:
    Catalyst 8.12 Preliminary Performance Notes

    * Crysis + 2-7%
    * Crysis Warhead + 2-3%
    * Devil May Cry 4 + 1-6%
    * Far Cry 2
    + noAA scores are fixed for Crossfire configs; this is worth +20% on slower cards, and as much as 70% on faster ones
    + 5-10% gains when AA is enabled
    * FEAR + 2-6%
    * Left 4 Dead + 2-4%
    * Lost Planet Colonies + 3-10%, mostly in Area 2
    * Prey + 2-5%
    * STALKER Clear Sky + 5-10%, primarily on Crossfire configurations

          if the driver applies to the card you have, which is 9x00 series and up i beleive, 99% of the time, if the drivers are modified to improve performance, it will improve performance, because the driver is x% more efficient, that will scale with the cards power equally (percentage wise)

            A new Catalyst already? Wow...

            I'm going to wait for the Final Release driver though, I think. I'm not really in the mood to reinstall the current driver tonight if it goes sideways. Be great to see some improvements though with [email protected] and maybe some low level acceleration on my virtual machine when I'm switching back and forth desktops.

              i would love to have some kinda of acceleration in VMs, they are SOOOO SLOW otherwise, my mouse moves and the fps of the vm drop single digits (on a fast or slow computer)

                I utilize VMware and have the tools installed which helps considerably, but it still gets laggy unfortunately. I've seen it lag on other systems powerful and not-so, so perhaps it's univeral. I dunno, but it could use a faster redraw. The card can certainly handle it.......

                  yep, its an emulated gfx card tho, and if you have ever done a 3d mark, you know how slow CPUs are at drawing even the crappiest of 3d graphics
