  • My new rig

Parts are ordered an on their way, should be here Wednesday.

    Part list:
    • NZXT Tempest Case
    • 2x Western Digital Caviar Black 640GB
    • XFX HD-487A-ZDDC Radeon HD 4870 XXX 1GB Video Card
    • PC Power & Cooling S75CF 750W Power Supply
    • ARCTIC COOLING MX-2 Thermal Compound
    • Crucial 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1066 (PC3 8500)
    • GIGABYTE GA-EX58-UD5 LGA 1366 Motherboard
    • Intel Core i7 920 Nehalem 2.66GHz LGA 1366 Quad-Core Processor

Also tossed in a 12inch 8pin power cable extension since the PSU goes in the bottom and Gigabyte decided to put the 8pin connection at the TOP of the motherboard. Knowing the cables on the PSU that I ordered, it might not be necessary, but better safe than sorry.

Cool! That seems like pretty slow speed for DDR3 memory though, what are the timings on it?

Looks good. You'll be happy with it for at least 2 years before the want for a new video will arise. :)

Everything else would suit whatever gaming needs you might have for probably a good 4 years.

Apparently without adjusting voltages and whatnot, the i7 920 can't handle more than 1066mhz RAM

Acreo: Yes, but see... that board does 3-way SLI or Crossfire... 2 more 4870 1gigs down the line? maybe ;)

Maybe. And that is if games down the line actually use SLI/Crossfire. Right now I think only a very few use either and even then it's not much of a boost.

Either way, you'll end up getting a more powerful card in 2 years time (if not sooner). It's a must for every (PC) gamer. ;)
