The new Firefox 3.5 has some significant enhancements to allow the use of downloadable fonts:

Here's some discussion by professional font developers:

There's significant tension between web designers who want cheap/free fonts and the commercial font foundries who don't want to see their work just given away.

    Re: Web fonts

If you have photoshop etc that came with fonts and have some on your pc that came with the pc or that you bought then you can edit these to your hearts desire, if you are creating a logo for someone you have to rasterize or flatten the image so the font cannot be edited by the customer, the customer can only use it for "print and preview" unless of course they own the font themselves.

With regards to websites, I see no problem with a designer using fonts they own and the browser displaying that font even if the user does not own that font but is still able to "print and preview" the font but not edit it.

Here's a nifty package that looks like it could let us use whatever fonts we want:

It's a PHP library that injects JavaScript that dynamically replaces text with images when the browser lacks the desired font.
