  • Startup Problem...

Alright well my sister is always downloading random crap on my mom's computer even though she has her own P.O.S. PC she SHOULD be doing that crap on, and when she tried installing sims 3, it kept screwing up when she tried installing it from the CD, but thats irrelevant. I told her to reboot to see if that fixes it... now EVERY time i try booting up my mom's computer, it looks like its launching ok, but after about the second screen that flashes by, the screen goes black with a blinking _ mark on the screen and nothing happens... i'd rebooted like 20 times and it does the same thing over and over again.

She has Vista Home Premium, and a pretty good computer, AMD phenom quad core, 4gb ram, stuff like that its a good PC, but its never done this before.

Can anyone help me out by giving me some pointers on what i should do to fix this? I've already tried putting in her restart disk to boot from disk, but it never shows up for me to press any button to boot from disk...

any ideas? please and thank you!!

Sounds like Windows failed to load. Have you tried using her system's Vista DVD to restore her Windows?

How would I do that? Is that the same thing as using the Vista disk to boot from disk to reformat?

        UPDATE:

Alright so after some hard searching on Google, I got an idea from a similar problem to switch the boot sequence so that CD/DVD booted first, so that i could at least reformat, and instead of the neverending flashing underscore, it asked me to press a key to boot from CD, i didnt, just to see, and now her PC boots up fine again. Thanks for the help, but I got it now :)

To answer your first question: no. You don't want to reformat. When you boot from the DVD, there should be a option labeld "Recovery" or something like that. That's what you want to run so it'll restore missing/corrupted Windows files so Windows will maybe load. (Not sure if it fixed a boot loader corruption though.)
