  • GPU news: ATI 5800 cards tested and Lucid's Hydra200 chip

First up a few reviews of the new HD5800 Series cards that are released today (one newegg listing so far)

Lucid's Hyrda chip allows multi-GPU setups with out the need for SLI or CF. In essence it is a load balancing chip for GPUs, offering up the ability to throw between 2 and 4 GPUs into a system regardless of performance or brand in windows 7 (vista will not allow dual GPU drivers but Win 7 will).

Lots of exciting things with IDF going on as well, lots of 32nm chip news including a working demo of the new Sandy Bridge architecture and some SRAM chips done in 22nm.

0_0 that lucid thing is a miracle! I can't wait. I though throwing together multiple random graphics cards would never be a reality.

Eh, not as amazing as I had thought according to the benches. I'll wait till X-mas. We'll see what Nvidia brings out.

I saw the Hydra 200 thing a little earlier and if that works then that is amazing! Imagine every GPU upgrade sticking your old GPU in, and getting the power of BOTH cards!

disappointed? it is a single GPU, within 10-15% of a dual GPU gtx295? when the X2 comes out, it will be nearly double what teh GTX295 is capable of, and you are disappointed?

Figure I would add in the the 5850 now

Looks like a beast for performance per price

better than a GTX285 (cheapest on sale at newegg is $325) and priced around $260 (we will have to see when they get in though, might have a bit of a premium)

Wow. The 5850 is the same length as the 4870 at 9 inches. And the 5870 is the same length as the 4870X2 at 10.5 inches. I gotta check if i can fit the 5870 in my case before even considering buying one.

With these cards out, you can get some decent deals on the 4890's, which appear to be the most bang for the buck with regards to video cards. I just installed one and have really enjoyed it so far.

                          This was just posted today:

Lucid's GPU-mixing HYDRA Engine gets previewed, shows real promise

Still buggy since it is prototype, but up to an 85% boost sounds good to me. In the other thread we have been talking and looks like a lot of us are running 8800 cards right now and want to upgrade. Think about being able to keep it in for a bit of a boost no matter what kind of card you buy.

Finally getting more news about Hydra.

MSI Big Bang Fuzion: Pulling The Covers Off Of Lucidís Hydra Tech

                            I love this part:
"But take a look at last monthís Steam hardware survey. A full 2.67% of respondents were running multi-GPU systems, and within that subset, 90% were utilizing SLI. For as big of a splash as we make over running two, three, or four graphics cards next to each other in gaming machines here on Tomís Hardware, very few end users actually follow suit."

As I've said before, it just doesn't make sense to run dual the way the system works now. With Hydra, that may be about to change.

"But the magic of Lucidís technology is the freedom to use a GeForce GTX 260 next to a GTX 285. Or run a Radeon HD 4870 next to a Radeon HD 5850. Oróget thisódrop a Radeon HD 5870 into a gaming machine next to a GeForce GTX 275."

I was planning to sell my 8800gts after upgrading, but would be awesome to keep it for a little extra boost.

Sadly, the review shows it just not ready for prime time yet. Too many major games aren't supported yet, and the price of $350 is pretty steep for a motherboard. Then again, buying a motherboard, that usually lasts 3-4 years, might help save you money on a gfx. card, that you want to upgrade every 1.5-2 years.
