  • Intel Core i9: Hands-on test of the six-core Gulftown

PCGames Hardware got their hands on an upcoming i9 and ran it through some tests. It does show some improvements in FPS and in number crunching tests, but not as much as I expected. I'm guessing things are still early, and will improve. And I wonder if the games out right now that support multi-core were written to only make use of 4 cores, or if they scale up............

There is one for sale up on ebay right now. I think it just sold for like $1200, but Intel will probably try and find out who leaked it.

General if it is multi-core, duel, quad or otherwise, it scales. The only exception that I know of would be if they try to assign each core to a particular task, but that in my mind would be a waste of code...

Now I should admit that this is for video/photo rendering and what knot, games I thought followed a similar logic but I'll be honest I not 100%. It all depends on the programmer. Given the nature of the beast, trying to recode the whole thing depending on single versus dual, versus quad, it would be simpler to just flat out code it for multi and leave it at that.

Re: Intel Core i9: Hands-on test of the six-core Gulftown

          Fudzilla just posted:
Gulftown 6-core is officially named "Core i7 980X"
Remember it's not official till Intel actually says it :row1_26:
But $999 puts it well out of most everyone's range anyway.
Till these become standard in a year or 2 and drop to $300 range.

In other intel news, if you have an i5 or i7, and are running Vista or Win7, you will want to grab this:
Intel Turbo Boost Monitor Application Now Available
It goes in your sidebar. Let us know how it works :D
