  • Laptop for gaming?

what would be a ok laptop for that, just source and bf2.

This is hypotetichal, but i might run across a laptop cheaper than a normal comp.

I hate upgrading, and i have to little space for all my computer stuff as it is.

well, the BEST is to tweak low graphics...but i managed to pull off high graphic/sprite and low shadow/reflection and it works perfectly.

i dunno bout bf2 b/c of the 64 meg 9600, but my Emachine m6811 has stock DVD+/-RW, 512 DDR, 80gig hdd, wifi, 3400+ Athlon64, and 15.4" widescreen. after adding 2 gig of ram.... I'm happy.

thats another thing, is it easy to stick ram in it yourself or do you have to pay someone to do it?

thanks for the feedback so far

depends on the laptop, some laptops come with easy access ram, others do not. You'd have to check it before you buy it.

with hp laptops, there's a small compartment DESIGNED for an extra memory.

I'm looking at a Fujitsu, mostly because it got an amd 64 3400 and an ATI mobility 9700pro. But it will probably be gone before i get my money, still I can dream :)

                    Re: Laptop for gaming?

Make sure you get one that has a non-IGP video card. I have a Compaq 2100US that has the 64mb Radeon in in, but it's shared memory, so it's dog slow for anything gaming related-unless the game is older. Double hit to the memory, as it were.

                    But, that ups the price.

I did have a Dell Inspiron 5000e that was my primary computer, and it was great for gaming. Add a external mouse and you are good to go.

                      Re: Laptop for gaming?

Ddogg and I both got emachines from Tigerdirect. They're refurbs tho but run great. Don't expect battery life like the Centrinos. One of my friends has a Centrino and can game on battery for a few hours. I'd be lucky to do 1.5 hours. If you don't mind about battery life since it seems to be replacing your desktop, I guess processor won't matter.

Just to note that on a Mobility Radeon 9600 64MB, I can play Half-Life 2 smoothly. However, your resolution is limited because you're dealing with an LCD monitor. I got a widescreen (1280x800) and it just happens that HL2 supports widescreen. Be sure to check the resolution capability of the laptop. I can't run 1280x1024. The best I get is 1280x800 if the game supports it or 1024x768.

                      - It's who you game with.
