  • Avast version 5.0 now available for download

Good news for folks needing free AV:

Avast - the world's most popular free antivirus - version 5.0 now available for download

What's new in version 5? Like many other AV developers, Alwil has made the new version lighter on system resources. They've cut down the total number of system processes Avast creates and boosted scanning speeds. The new behavioral shield provides solid heuristic detection for threats not yet included in Avast's definitions.
But what I'm interested in is a part of the paid version:

The professional version also adds sandboxing - which you can leverage outside the antivirus program itself. Want to run your web browser in Avast's sandbox? Go right ahead. It's an excellent way to add another layer of protection to your system and it's not coming at a premium price -- Avast Pro goes for $39.95.
I have been wanting an easy sandbox app for a while, but none of them worked with Vista/Win7 due to some MS thing. I'm going to look through and find if this will work.

EDIT: Looks like their site is getting hit hard right now with everyone downloading.

The Silent/Gaming mode is pretty cool.

Seems to be scanning a bit faster also.

On a related note: Bamboo, sandboxie just released a version of their program that runs a sandbox on 64 bit platforms.
