  • HTML coding help...

    Hey guys and gals, a friend is doing some coding on a website and is having issues with how it looks on internet explorer versus firefox. Please click here and look at this page in both firefox and ie and notice the difference.

    Does anyone know how to fix this?

    I really appreciate any help in advance.

    Re: HTML coding help...

    first thing that really stood out for me was that there is no doctype. firefox doesnt require one to render correctly, internet explorer does because, well, microsoft is dumb and their rendering engine is flawed.
    try inserting this BEFORE the html open tag. I tried it on a test run, and it seemed to work ok, but I cant REALLY tell because I have neither the javascript that the page calls for nor the images from the page.
    Code:
    <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd">
    <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">
    also, your buddy really needs to just shell out the $5.00 a month for paid hosting with godaddy or else he's going to have that very very annoying and unprofessional parking bar at the top of the page forever.

      Also, I ran it through W3's markup validator, which can be found here and it came up with 15 errors, 41 warnings. see results here:

        You probably want to get yourself an html editing program like notepad++ (free) or dreamweaver etc.

        Which version is the look you're going after?

          Re: HTML coding help...

          Gator, are you talking about the gap circled in red?

          Firefox 3.6.8 (left) & Internet Explorer 8 (right)

          That's the only difference I'm seeing.

          First off, the use of TABLE is depreciated when it comes to page layouts. They should only be used to organize and present data, not page layouts. Instead you should be using <DIV> and CSS markup to do your layouts.

          Secondly, without rewriting your entire page markup, your TABLE's width shouldn't be 100%. Instead it should be:

          Code:
          <table width="778px" border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0">
          Otherwise, the individual cells in your table rows are flushing left with the browser window in IE. If you set a table width to something only slightly bigger (for margin of error) than the actual content, then the gap between the right callout boxes shouldn't happen.

          The errors above are minor. I'm guessing whoever wrote the markup was writing in HTML 4 instead of XHTML.
