I grew up loving Doctor Who, and part of its charm is the schockiness of its production values. But I still enjoy the technology of special effects, even if they're not a selling feature of movies for me. I recall reading The Making of Star Trek (a book that outshines any other "making of" book or show I've seen since) and The World of Star Trek which outlined in detail how a TV series is made and in particular how a series with lots of FX requirements is assembled.
