  • Representative Gabby Giffords shot.

My Representative in the US house was shot at a grocery store 5 minutes from my house today. She survived but 6 others have died, including a federal judge and a 9 year old girl. I was in that same store early this morning buying provisions for my 4 wheeling trip today and my wife was planning on shopping there until I convinced her to come with me. I'm a bit shaken and upset. So far, it appears that the gunman is a deranged anti-government lunatic but it seems that there was an accomplice that was not yet located.

Anyhow, I'm a bit shaken up by all of this.

It's a terrible tragedy. God may forgive the shooter, but I wont. I hope he suffers and dies a thousand horrible deaths. He's a pathetic coward.

I used to eat paint chips. Now I just drink the paint because I couldn't find a salsa that went well with the chips and they were dry =)

I hate what this guy did but in a way I feel sorry for him as I read in a few reports that he is severely mentally unstable. It is a shame that his friends or family did not take more action to try to give him medical care and/or in a mental facility, and it should have thrown a red flag up especially after he posted "I'm sorry everyone" or something like that a few hours earlier on facebook. Also, they should have psych evaluations for anyone wanting to buy a gun, this guy should have never had one in the first place. Overall though I can not condone what he did, mental or not, as it was a horrid crime.

Completely agree. What this man did was horrid and he should be punished every possible way allowed by law, but my question is why the hell did he have a gun? I mean he was kicked out of college for having crazed personality and a fellow student was scared for her life that he would do something like what he did in their classroom. The college even recommended that he see a mental physician as soon as possible. I just hope to hell the Govt gets their head out of their ass and puts stricter regulations on gun permits.
Another thing I have a problem with is the whole way the Tea-Party talked during the election. For example, Sarah Palin putting cross hairs on different Democratic districts, I mean give me a break don't tell me that she "didn't mean it" or that they "were taken the wrong way" that's total bull. If you show cross hairs on different districts to millions of people and say, these aren't her exact words but they sounded something like, "We need to take them out." And numerous other Tea-Party representatives said "we need to exercise our 2nd amendment rights." One person will take it the wrong way and actually do that. Which in my opinion, is part of the reason why this man did this terrible act.
So there are many things/people to blame for this, but none-the-less it will go down in history as a very, very horrible shooting.

Uh, let's NOT cater to the lowest common denominator of our society when we draw up our new police state legislature.

Stricter regulations won't do much to combat violence related to guns. Mr. CrazyAss could've obtained it easily from someone in a disreputable neighborhood. After all, the drug dealers of the United States don't legally purchase their firearms.

The dude was crazy. If he had received the idea to go on a killing spree from Spongebob Squarepants, we'd now be seeing all the dumbass legislators in Washington clamoring for stricter regulations of Nickelodeon cartoons, frothing from their mouths at the opportunity to ride the coattails of a tragedy to ram radical legislation in before everyone regains their senses. Anyone remember the Patriot Act? The Dept. of Homeland Security? I mean...

Pennsylvania Rep. Robert Brady, a Democrat from Philadelphia, told CNN that he also plans to take legislative action. He will introduce a bill that would make it a crime for anyone to use language or symbols that could be seen as threatening or violent against a federal official, including a member of Congress.
I'm guessing that sterling piece of 1st Amendment curtailment is directed towards the "Sarah Palin crosshair chart" crap. The Tea Party and their map is not a reasonable cause of this tragedy. A mentally unstable person twisting a political message into something it wasn't is the cause of this tragedy. When you're insane, a message can be discerned from anything, such as the shape of your Cheerios floating in the milk of your morning cereal or the plotline of the Modern Warfare 2 videogame. "Targeting" maps are not indicative to reasonable persons of a command to go kill someone, as evidenced by other uses of a map with "targets" on them, in these cases Democrats targeting Republicans: http://www.verumserum.com/?p=13647

                  Re: Representative Gabby Giffords shot.

Let me just comment on what Gill and others are talking about.

I think what we have are three separate issues here:

                  1) The shooting was perpetrated by a severely deranged individual. We don't fully know yet what his motivations were. To blame political rhetoric is premature. And even if he was influenced in some way, I would have trouble making the leap to blame any specific party, group, or individual except the shooter himself.

                  2) The fact the shooter obtained a handgun fairly easy has become a talking point for gun control advocates. These people are very passionate about their beliefs, but now is not the time to make hay about it. Personally, I think the measures taken by law enforcement currently are good enough. We are talking about a guaranteed civil right in the Bill of Rights. Further gun control cannot, and never will, stop the one lone crazed gunman. It will only further infringe on the majority of legal gun owners rights as it has in the past.

                  3) Writers, journalists, and bloggers who have used this tragedy to further point out, and even go as far as blaming conservative talking heads for the shooting, are just wrong to do so. Now, this does not mean that the political rhetoric has not crossed the line, especially in the last election where it was totally inappropriate, xenophobic, hateful, and extremely divisive. This is what the Republicans had to do to get back in power. They rallied the most base of support and catered to, really, the craziest of partisan bottom feeders. But, even that being said, it's irresponsible for liberals to try and capitalize on the tragic shooting. Do we need a national conversation and more accountability about being civil and disagreeing without being disagreeable? Absolutely.

                    Re: Representative Gabby Giffords shot.

Wow I hope she turns out to be okay after the operational etc. Also RIP to all the 6 who died.

I read on the BBC that they had to cut out half of Gifford's skull out, since her brain would have swelled and damage would have occurred when trying to expand since the skull is in the way. - So they removed it. I can't believe she is actually still alive after being shot in the head, that is crazy. Apparently it was to some quick thinking by aid workers on the scene of the accident which made her live initially.

I really do hope she makes a full recovery.

As for the guy getting the gun. If you are motivated into doing something such as this, you are going to find a gun, no matter how strict the gun laws are imho.

Seems to me like alternative rock music was a bigger influence on the assassin's thinking than any type of national media. His Youtube video of burning a flag starts off with the creepy song "Let the Bodies Hit the Floor," if that tells you anything. One of Ms. Gifford's two Youtube subscriptions was to the assassin's main channel, oddly enough.

Then, we can look up the DLC targeting various states, including Virginia, before Cho at VT.

The Wall Street Journal has an opinion article that addresses the concern of blood libel that has arisen in the aftermath of this incident.

Edit: I am very close to this situation, as I grew up and lived in Tucson for 23 years. Tucson is essentially a border town (proximity to Mexico is less than an hour) with extensive drug trafficking and gang presence. Giffords was relatively pro-gun, tough on illegal immigration and pro-border security... a fairly popular combination in Arizona.

This is from that link that Damonte posted above:

To be clear, if you're using this event to criticize the "rhetoric" of Mrs. Palin or others with whom you disagree, then you're either: (a) asserting a connection between the "rhetoric" and the shooting, which based on evidence to date would be what we call a vicious lie; or (b) you're not, in which case you're just seizing on a tragedy to try to score unrelated political points, which is contemptible. Which is it?

                              Bingo!
