FORT LUPTON - The mother of a 13-month-old boy who drowned in a bathtub told police she was on Facebook in another room when her son died.

Shannon Johnson of Fort Lupton was arrested on charges of child abuse resulting in death.

According to an arrest affidavit, Johnson's son died on Sept. 20 after she left him alone in the bathroom for a few minutes.

According to the affidavit, when police got to her home, Facebook was still up on her laptop. She told police she was playing a game called Café World while her son was in the tub.

Johnson told officers Joseph was playing in the tub for 10 minutes and she had checked on him once. When three minutes passed without the sound of him playing, she went to check on him and found him on his side with his face in the water.

He was flown to The Children's Hospital in Aurora where he died.

According to the affidavit, Johnson told police her baby "wanted to be left alone" and was a very "independent baby."

She also told police she knew what it was like to be told "no," and she did not want her baby to be told "no."

The affidavit says she also did not want him to be known as a "mama's boy."

Johnson told police she had been leaving her little boy in the bathtub alone for several weeks.

Court documents indicate Joseph had been treated for a seizure about a month before his death.

Johnson will appear in court on Friday. She is being held at the Weld County Jail on a $100,000 bond. Link.
    Wow, I'm speechless.

Here's some data about women being addicted to Facebook.

The First Thing Young Women Do in the Morning: Check Facebook

While the study covers all of social media, it’s clear that women in the 18-34 range are focused on their Facebook accounts. More than half of young women (57%) say they talk to people online more than face-to-face. A full 39% of them proclaim themselves Facebook addicts, while 34% of young women make Facebook the first thing they do when they wake up, even before brushing their teeth or going to the bathroom.

Here are some other interesting stats regarding young women and Facebook:

21% of women age 18-34 check Facebook in the middle of the night
63% use Facebook as a networking tool
42% think it’s okay to post photos of themselves intoxicated
79% are fine with kissing in photos
58% use Facebook to keep tabs on “frenemies”
50% are fine with being Facebook friends with complete strangers

Wow... Statistics which say absolutely nothing.

What if the woman would made herself coffee in those ten minutes?
Would everyone yell in anger about coffee addiction?

Don't get me wrong, it's plain stupid to let a kid alone in the tub, for WHATEVER reason. But to cry and weep about FB is just stupid.
It's the whole violent video game story all over, just this time on a broader spectrum almost everyone can connect to.

    The problem isn't Facebook.
The problem is a careless mother.
    Simple as that.

Indeed, FB is just the latest fad to be targeted. I'll bet the telephone would have gotten similar coverage when it was first introduced, except that the first telephones were only available to the rich. How about CB? Any cases of "CB addiction" leading to toddler deaths back in the 70's?

It seems we have some rather testy Facebook apologists in here. :)

When you said fad were you referring to F.A.D. (Facebook Addiction Disorder)? :icon_lol:

This was WoW over the last few years. Now your social life is the addictive interactive experience.

Its a tragedy, but this has nothing to do with facebook, as Vouk said.

OK, here's another Facebook related crime. :)

Florida teens charged with felony cyber bullying

Two southwest Florida teens were charged with felony aggravated stalking after authorities said they posted nude images of a female classmate on Facebook.

The 15- and 16-year-old high school students were charged Wednesday after a more than eight-month investigation by law enforcement officials into a pair of Facebook accounts created in April.

Sexually explicit photos were posted and doctored to include the head of the victim on a nude female's body, officials said. The accounts were created to seem as if the victim had posted the images.

The teens have been ordered to serve 21 days of home detention and will be arraigned Feb. 8.

Authorities said the victim was ridiculed by classmates in the days after the pages became active, which is what elevated the offense to a form of cyber bullying. Officials won't confirm whether the victim is still attending the school.

School officials initially became aware of the first Facebook account on April 29 when a parent alerted the high school's resource officer, according to the Lee County Sheriff's Office report.

That triggered a full investigation, in which the resource officer interviewed several students and learned the victim had been teased after the accounts were posted.

The victim was interviewed and denied making the accounts.

Lee County Sheriff investigators assigned to the FBI's Innocent Images Task Force were called in and subpoenaed several records. The investigation led them to the charged teens, who told authorities they used a computer program to splice nude images with a photo of the victim, who one of the teens said was a former friend.

Despite the involvement of the federal task force, a spokesman in the Lee County Sheriff's Office said he was unaware of any pending federal charges.
Is charging these two juvenile girls for felony aggravated stalking a bit excessive? Or, are the current charges sufficient or not severe enough?

Doesn't publishing an artificial picture of a naked teen count as child porn?

They just photoshopped the head onto some nude body. Was probably just some naked chick.

Ah, looks like the law that would have criminalized it was struck down by SCOTUS:

                          http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Child_P...on_Act_of_1996

However, it might still be illegal in Canada and other countries:

Mom should have gone shoplifting, instead:

I think photoshop has some culpability in this case as well, along with the internet provider they used and the website they took the original picture from. Also I think it's fair to include Al Gore since he invented the internet, right?

If I rolled my eyes any more they would become stuck.
