    December 16, 2003 -- YOU won't be seeing any video of Howard Dean's x-rated, epithet-ridden New York fund-raiser because Team Dean made sure to bar the TV cameras. Which suggests they expected trouble.

    <snip>

    Comic Judy Gold dissed President Bush as "this piece of living, breathing s---" and Janeane Garofalo ridiculed the Medicare prescription-drug bill that Bush had just signed as the "you can go f--- yourself, Grandma" bill.

    <snip>

    And the Dean event got a lot worse. Comedian David Cross used the N-word for blacks in a disjointed "joke" apparently based on the premise that it's fine for a pro-Dean comic to use racial epithets as long as the goal is to claim Republicans are racists.

    Comic Kate Clinton evoked Michael Jackson (hit with new child-sex-abuse charges) and said: "Frankly, I'm far more frightened of Condoleezza Rice" - the Bush national security adviser who has nothing in common with Jackson except being black.

    Rice seems to drive liberal woman comics especially nuts. Sandra Bernhard insulted her in racial terms with a "Yes Massa" accent at another Dean fundraiser the same night. Perhaps the pro-Dean comics find it unbearable that the most powerful black woman in U.S. history, close friend to the president and his wife - and a brilliant classical pianist to boot - dares to be a Republican.

    Actually, there was something to offend everyone. Dean rival Joe Lieberman got ridiculed for being unable to campaign on Jewish holidays because he's Orthodox. Vice President Dick Cheney was accused of talking "like Mary Jo Buttafuoco."

    Cheney's wife Lynne was called "Lon Chaney" - the long-ago movie star who specialized in playing ghouls in horror films. And Cheney's daughter Mary, who is gay, was called "a big lezzie."

    Even the apolitical "jokes" were ugly - like a suggestion that it's bizarre to see an Asian baby with Asian parents because so many Asian babies are adopted by whites.

    As all this hate was getting spewed out, Dean sat backstage listening. Aides say he was fuming, so livid that he almost refused to come out to talk to the crowd. When he did, he began by saying some of the language was "wrong" and "I just don't have much tolerance for ethnic humor." But he didn't refer to all the X-rated anti-Bush and anti-Cheney attacks.

    More to the point, he did nothing to stop the hate session. It was, after all, Dean's fund-raiser. He had the power (to use Dean's favorite phrase) to come right out on stage and say the "jokes" were unacceptable and he wanted it stopped, immediately.

    Anyone else think that this should be front page stuff? I mean people cared that Arnold felt some boobs many years ago, but this isn't a larger indicator of character? I recall about a year ago that a certain GOP member was trashed by both parties for saying that he supported Strom Thurmond's Presidential bid (which was on a segregationist platform). THOSE WERE COMMENTS ABOUT SOMETHING THAT WAS LONG IN THE PAST, DEAN'S SUPPORTERS ARE DOING IT RIGHT NOW!!!!

    x-rated? doesn't that imply pornography? Hate session?

    what's mentioned up above might be in poor taste, but that's the kind of thing that am radio is founded on. (except pointed in the other direction)

    Need a tissue or something?

    btw... strom's illegitmate black daugter has recently come into public view.. trippy eh? Has sex with a black woman, then disavows any relation to her, then continues to degrade blacks.. (and is defended staunchly by the repubs)

    front page, nah... Osama's location.. sure.

      Just another case of most media sources being completely biased. Even if they were let inside, I bet some of them would never have reported it.

      Yes, I think it should be front page. Here is a major political contender for the democratic presidential nomination, and he is (allegedly) having all sorts of racist/sexist/whatever comments being made. And it seems he knew it would be that way, since he kept the media out.

      Now, is this true/accurate? I don't know. Nice of him to keep the media out. :D But I wouldn't go crazy over it until I had some sort of concrete evidence. Then I'd want to see him grilled over a fire in the same way that everyone else (ie, the other side) has been.

        They're comics not politicians. It's not Dean's job to cut them off. I think coming out and saying he felt some of the things said were wrong is plenty. Even though it's his fund raiser, he doesn't have to play PC police. If he had come out and shut them up in the middle he would have been doing the same crap that got the Politically Incorrect guy fired - punishing them because they're not acting PC enough. Now, what he should have done, maybe, was not hire them in the first place. But to go out and shut them down on the spot is too much.

        To me it looks like you're just itching for a way to connect what these comics said to Dean himself. Let it go. Why don't you bother attacking his positions on the issues instead? (note - I don't anything about the guy. Haven't even looked at any of those guys yet.)

          No, I'm not. I'm just saying that if Bush had done it, he'd be nailed to the wall. That's just a sad reality.

          I think it should be ok for both sides to do this sort of thing, but it doesn't be. Most media tends to lean in a democratic direction.

          My statement is more of a comment about the inequality of the media. I just want Dean to reap what every other politician gets. That's all.

                Everyone on the left thinks the media is on the right and everyone on the right thinks the media is on the left. :)

                Skylark, my point is that Dean didn't do it. If Bush did it yeah he'd be nailed to a wall. If Dean had done it he'd be nailed to a wall. But if some entertainers at a fund raiser did it, then no.

                Ender, then why did Bill Maher get fired?

                  We have been the cowards, lobbing cruise missiles from 2,000 miles away. That's cowardly, Staying in the airplane when it hits the building, say what you want about it, it's not cowardly.
                  Bill Maher's enemies throw this comment back at him calling him "unpatriotic", people started calling into ABC HQ complaing about him and his comment, it got so bad people started protesting Disney (ABC is a Disney owned network) so when it came time to renew the show for the next season, ABC refused to renew show with out warning.

                  I personally was pissed, I'm a big fan of Bill Maher and his show was the only reason why I watched ABC, so I did want any fan would do. I wrote a letter to ABC and Disney telling them about my outrage and in the way they handled this and told them if they didnt renew his contract that I would never watch ABC, Disney, and I would never buy any Disney products until they renewed his contract. It of course didnt work, they never renewed his contract. Which is good now, because he's on HBO (yay!) so he's completely uncensored. HBO pretty much doesnt care what he talks about, so the show is better then ever because he doesnt have to censor himself for his sponsors.

                    I like Bill Maher and miss his show. I recentely started to resort to Comedy central for the Daily Show and Tough Crowd.

                        Yeah, that's what I thought happened Ender. I think my sentence was just convoluted and unclear. I wasn't attributing the action: "punishing them because they're not acting PC enough" to Bill Maher, but the ones who complained so much.

                          YES! My mommy got me his book "Naked Pictures of Famous People" for Christmas. :) Very strange. For instance, the chapter called "Martha Stewart's Vagina." Funny, though. I mean, it is Jon Stewart.

                            Jon Stewart is great. I cant watch Tough Crowd because well, its a rip off of PI and I dont think that dude who hosts it is very funny.

                              I tried really hard to give Colin Quinn a chance, because Comedy Central is awesome and it came on right after Daily Show, but I just couldn't stand the show. The comedians tried to make jokes off stereotypes, but they weren't funny or witty at all, just base comments. Rather then making a joke about how women are bad drivers, they'd just go "Women are crappy drivers (insert profanity) HAHAHAHAHAHA" That's not a joke, it's just a blank statement. But they'd all laugh like they were kids getting away with saying "penis" in class. You could even tell on the show that sometimes the guest comedian would drop out of the conversation because it was getting so absurdely retarded.

                              Oh well, I don't get Comedy Central anymore so it doesn't matter to me.

                              And the reason PI worked well was because the people they had on the show could hold their own in an intelligent conversation. Not so with Tough Crowd.
