Anyone read about this? There was an article in this month's PC Gamer about it. Pretty cool.

That's awesome, I used to play eve alot and this is exactly the type of gameplay the developer's are going after. Many may not like it but it's the cold hard truth. It's a vicious but fun game, all about community.

That sounds awesome! Makes me want to actually play the game.. Is it any good? How many people do we have that play?

Makes me think that these online games need online banks, insurance companies, and security services.

I have a pretty good character there and i know a few people that still play. Last i was on i had about a million Skill points and a raven Battleship with lots of other goodies. I was leading a corp that is now dead. One thing to realise about this game is the leveling system is skill points and it's based over time. Then you have mining, player structures and player made items through Blueprints. There is also PVP in certain galaxies. Corporations run by NPC's and people also have control of free space on the outer areas, which control rare minerals.

The biggest downer for alot of people is the time based skilling which is dependant on your stats. That can also be helped along with rare implants that raise stats and reduce time to skill up, as well as learning skills that reduce that as well.

I could be swayed to play with TG'ers it's a total strategy game. The game is free to download and costs around 8 bucks a month to play.

I used to play too, had a Typhoon battleship and numerous frigates and cruisers. The game had amazing graphics and a good atmosphere, but I just got burned out.

Sadly my character has been vaporized.

                    Re: Massive EVE Online Heist

I joined a core system mining operation for about 4 months. Once people had some of their skills up, we moved to an outer system to harvest more valuable ore and hunt pirates. Then one day my escort carrier fell asleep at the helm and I lost my Mammoth hauler (my prized posession at the time, being a noob) to a random mercenary trolling the area. That pretty much ended my time there.

It is a great game design and I'd love to see the new interface they added since I left, but the world really does encourage some of the worst gamer impulses. Everyone is a damn bounty hunter, everyone is a badass, and there is no real community-building outside of amassing wealth and weapons and kicking the crap out of your closest neighbor. A lot of opportunities for people who think playing an "evil alignment" is "a challenging role-playing experience."

Still, given the cost and the opportunities for strategy, I'd encourage TGers to give it a try, even to building a TG corp. But EVE, she is a cruel mistress. You will need to log in at least twice a day to manage your skill advancement, and be prepared to log many hours at your navigation and mining consoles before you stand a chance in any kind of combat.

actually now I think you can control your skills from the web.

Building a corp is a job for many people and there is insurance for when you lose ships and other goodies. You can acquire blueprints to remake them as well. Steeler is right it's a cruel world if your not careful.

Wow. I'm stunned by the depth and intricacy of the game world that the story evidences!

I don't have the time to get so deeply involved as those that are a part of this seem to have, but I have to admit, far from thinking it dispicable, the complexity, depth, and freedom entice me...

My question: what did the player that got assassinated do after this?

I played FFXI for a little over a year, and in the course of that time I knew several people who had some/all of their gear/money stolen through devious means of other players (stolen accounts, whatnot). Some even lost important and rare things through accidental means of their own. Now, it would have taken a tremendous amount of work and effort, but they could have gotten those things back (it wasn't like they had to start completely over, or even close). However, they instead chose to quit playing.

I wonder if this player did the same, or stuck it out and is trying to rebuild.

What I think is interesting is that these virtual efforts correspond to real-world financial gain. Funny how in a few years one may be able to earn a real living as a virtual merchant.

People already do that now. I've known of people that spent hours upon hours sitting at home to regularly get items in a game to sell to others for real money. And that's not your standard chinese gil/gold/whatever money farmer that everyone complains about. One of my friends knew a guy that made around $50k/yr doing this, it was his job.
