  • Online Stock Brokers

I'm soliciting some on-line brokerage advice.

I want to put some of my savings into a self-directed stock portfolio. I can open an investment account at my bank but they charge $25 minimum for purchases. E-trade is cheaper but not by much ($20 for the amount of activity I will need). I'm not looking to invest a great deal of money but I want to invest in several stocks so it will be small amounts in each. These fees represent a significant per centage.

Does anybody have experience with InteractiveBrokers? www.interactivebroker.com or www.interactivebroker.ca. Their minimum fee is only $2 but they seem to have a $10 monthly minimum which sucks because I'm not looking to buy and sell frequently.

Any self-directed investors out there? How do you manage the broker's fees?
