A good friend of mine and his wife are having their first child this morning. Welcome to the world, Zephyr Dax Ortiz.

    That's right folks, Zephyr Dax.

What are some "odd" names you've run across?

I have a friend of mine whose name is Winter. I've heard of Summer and April, but Winter was a completely new one for me. Sad part is that her birthday is in the summer, heh.

Personally I have always found Elvis and Dallas to be odd name. Unless you are the King or the city.

Glu. Apparently used as an acronym for "God loves u".......

While I didn't meet him personally a friend of my father's met this young man. He was head administrator (my dad's friend, not Glu) for an institution housing troubled youth. Glu was up high up on the list in the problem department.

                  Re: Baby names

I've been noticing lots of people picking their children's names as if they were naming a pet or worse, an RPG character. But the ones that make me laugh the most are when people give their kids stripper/porno names. We used to have a boy named Storm who lived near us. Don't people realize that those are the names their kids will take AFTER they run away from home?

My mom wouldn't let him, but my dad wanted to name me:

                    Allowicious
                    Bartholomew
                    Chauncey
                    Debusey
                    Engle

                    Notice the initials...

The sick part is that when my wife was pregnant, I was thinking, "Man, it wouldn't be that bad. He could be called Al, or Chance, or Bart. And he'd have cool initials!"

I have some friends who named their son "Drake Typhon". We call him "Ducky" and it drives them nuts. They are very odd people with Ankh tatoos and very into the "Goth" scene. Good people though.

A note on Storm, I like that name.
Names are a very cultural thing, in Norway names where traditionally taken from elements of nature which where qualities you wanted your child to inherit.
An example is Torbjorn (from the Mythical God Thor and the Bear - spelled bjorn).
Another example is my name Espen, which means Godly bear.

Different cultures tend to take their names from different elements, Scandinavian names very often come from Northern Mythology, I would guess that a lot of US names do the same.

Uh ya, no offense to anyone named Storm or their parents. ;) Everyone has their own view of names and how they should be chosen. If nobody had ever come up with NEW names, we'd have a hard time distinguishing anyone. :)

I'm telling you, my son Optimus Prime (first then middle) will be the coolest kid in school. He can be Tim for short, if it really bothers him that much.
