  • Stupid drivers (this one takes the cake)

So I was heading to work this morning, I have a freeway drive all the way in. I get on the freeway and signal to go over to the middle lane. In the fastlane about 20 car lengths back I notice a state trooper. I look down and i'm doing 72mph. No biggie, I'm not going to get pulled over for this. We go about 1 mile when I catch traffic in my lane, so he passes me. I change lanes behind him and follow him, getting back over to the middle lane when I can.

A woman in a Toyota Camry passes me and goes up behind the trooper, and another car passes before I can get back into the fast lane. I look ahead and I say to myself "Wow, she's following that trooper way too close." Well, apparently the trooper thought the same thing. He hits the brakes and throws on the strobes sending her a warning. Not only did she not hit her brakes, she closed the gap on the trooper. I guess she had the typical "m*sshole" mentality of "get the hell out of my way." Being the nice and understanding type that Mass troopers are, he gave her a second warning of brakes and strobes.....no avail, the gap between her and the trooper stayed the same or closed a bit.

At this point I'm thinking "Wow, I'm witnessing the stupidest driver on earth at this very moment." It's not like a state trooper to give you one warning, let alone two. At that moment he swerved hard into the center lane (he was pissed for sure) and she actually hit the gas and went on by him. The person behind her wasn't all that bright either as he attempted the same, but the trooper signaled he was coming over and cut that guy off. On went the strobes and that woman got pulled over.

My question is, how did she avoid the chlorine in the gene pool for so long? What a moron!

My aunt got pulled once and when the officer saw the nail she had stuck in her eye, he changed his mind about the ticket and escorted her to the ER. I'd have to guess that either the lady had one-too-many bags of whiteout with breakfast or something was going on that was more important to her than the ticket.

I dunno, I might have a challenger. I saw someone last weekend attempt to perpendicular park. In the oncoming traffic lanes in the middle of one of our busiest streets.

I was wondering why traffic was stalled when I switched lanes, and then I passed this guy who had his nose to the curb. What's worse is that no one was letting him back out, heh.

I enjoyed my visit to Manhatten many years ago where there was HUGE signs explaining how people would be ticketed for getting stuck in the intersection on red because of the resulting gridlock. There were policemen on horseback sitting by the intersection, very visible to everyone. When the light went green, the intersection instantly filled with cars even though the cars on the other side were stopped. The intersection was predictably full of cars when the light went red. The cops didn't issue tickets. I'm not sure why not, maybe because that would even further slow the traffic.

If it is like FL, the simple rule is, the car in the intersection has the right of way, regardless of the traffic signal color. So a car whos front bumper is beyond the white line when the signals change from yellow to red holds the right-of-way for the intersection. Crossing traffic is required to yield to the traffic until it has passed - regardless of how long it takes. They tried 'Do not block intersection signs' but that does not change the rules.

This happens often in some areas here and common courtesy is to wait until the traffic starts moving on the other side of the intersection before blocking it, however if the crossing traffic is turning right on the street you are on, they fill up the available space for when your direction goes back to green.. so the only way to get through the intersection is to go out and block traffic - because technically the traffic must yield to you until the intersection is clear.

Well, sometimes you don't really have much choice unless you are driving a monster truck. :)

Same rules apply here. I just found the Manhatten case to be funny because of the monstrous signs and the obvious police presence. I survived all of the insane driving in there and then got pulled over for turning right on red (legal where I live, legal in New Jersey, illegal in NYC).

Yeah - I remember the signs.. nobody pays any attention to the signs except for maybe the parking sides stuff.

I always thought that at an intersection, if you are turning right on red, but it is a red arrow you can turn right - but apparently that wasn't clear enough so they've had to add giant LED signs up next to the signal thats says "NO RIGHT ON RED" - but they are only on at certain times of day. So either I am wrong or that rule doesn't count anymore.

I hate it when a cop is rolling below the limit by 5MPH or so on the interstate and the traffic won't pass them.. three lanes wide and they won't pass the 'pace car'.

How funny would it be to be a cop and do that? Follow the leader? You speed up then hit the brakes.

It's illegal to right turn on a red within city limits in most large cities, I think.

Heh... yes, it makes me laugh when people slow from going AT the speed limit to going well below the speed limit just because they see a police car. It doesn't matter if the car is sitting at a donut shop, or executing a traffic stop, or empty, or driving on another highway.

I found a good link about right on red.
