  • How many planets are there, 8 or 10?

Kind of an interesting debate going down in the Czech republic as astronomers are looking to further define what a planet is. Based on their conversations, this will change the dynamics of our understanding of the solar system. Quick poll, do we end up with 8 planets, or 10?

I say 10, if Pluto's a planet why can't the other one behind be one too?

I say 8. It is ok to acknowledge our past mistakes as technology gives us a better view of the universe. Pluto should never have been a planet,

Actually we might be looking at 12. Here is the list:
        Mercury
        Venus
        Earth
        Mars
        Ceres(*)
        Jupiter
        Saturn
        Uranus
        Neptune
        Pluto(*)
        Charon(*)
        Xena

(*) The International Astronomers Union will in the next two weeks discuss the qualifications an atronomical body must hold in order to be classified as a planet. If they accept a proposal that says any body orbiting a star with a mass exceeding no less than 800KM in diameter is a planet will we be looking at 12 planets in our solar system.

I am just happy to hear that people are having a open discussion/debate about this, after all it is science and as we know more, old thinkings will and can be re-evaluated to reflect the facts.

I'm thinking 8 is the way to go, for the same reasons as loyalguard posted.

If 8 is no good, then I'll go with 39, just to make sure we have some room to grow as we discover more in the future. :)

                  I say make it 12.

That'll REALLY mess with the astrologists. :D

I say 8. Pluto is an asteroid.
There was a great show about this on the Science Channel (284 for those with satellite DTV)

I thought they found a planet in 1999/2000 and called it planet-x or something?

I refuse to acknowledge any planet named after a warrior princess. I would say name it Tarpan, but no one would get it right and just keep calling it Tarpon or Torpan.
