It will only be the future if they can sell it for the same price (or lower) as normal tires. I don't see it being the future, a) due to the potential added weight (unsprung weight = bad), b) aero dynamics issues, c) potential higher cost, d) it looks bad.

Ingenious! If they work as well (or better) as tires today and are comparatively priced, I'm making the switch. I hate car maintenance.

Very interesting. I'll be following this.

I find this rather intriguing. Perhaps not from a pure performance view, but decent enough for basic transportation. Hmmmm.

From a performace view. I'm always worried about blowing-out a tire at 120mph and my run-flat tires are expensive.

These things look like they would tear apart at high speeds.

                this is pretty old news.

i doubt it will hit mainstream. too expensive for economy use, too ugly for expensive cars (i'm sure they can make it look more normal, but no one's going to replace the big wheels and lo-pro tires on their sportscar with a tweel).

It's interesting that people don't like them because I think they look better than regular car tires.

I hate them because then my spinners wouldn't work.

Just pump up the bass so that your minivan rattles more, that'll make up for it.

I can see it now, tire warp on the drag strip, top performance dragsters can spin a tire out of its treads with the torque they have (I've seen it done in real life) I'd be afraid to try those.

As for looks, ya there ugly, but im sure they'll make a some side wall to cover those nasty bands.

They could make the side walls out of rubber!

                            Re: The future of tires?

Making sidewalls with no function other that just to cover up the ugly bits is inefficient and adds unnecessary weight to an already heavy tire. Plus, who wants to have tires with sidewall that is 6" deep? This tire design is practically inventing an answer to a question that nobody asks.

The ONLY application I see is for industrial application.

That was a joke, dude. But you make me think of something. I wonder if you can have this sort of tire in a low profile version, so you can have the big brake calipers etc. without jacking the car up.

This doesn't look like a tire for all applications, but I bet it's awesome for somethings. Running over spikes strips, for example.
