  • The Net at Risk

    http://www.pbs.org/moyers/moyersonam...net/index.html

Anyone else catch this last night on PBS? While fears of net neutrality legislation may be overhyped (this despite my belief that congress should stay out of this), this 90 minute program did a fantastic job of laying out the absolute greed and disservice of the U.S. RBOCs (regional baby bells) - otherwise known as today's digitial divide (http://www.pbs.org/moyers/moyersonam.../usworld.html).

Americans today are paying far too much for telephone and Internet service. This was permitted by the government in order to fund more advanced services - namely broadband Internet. This return on investment hasn't happened. Instead, our baby bells have spent their profits investing in wireless telephone spectrum and infrastructure, as well as lawsuits and congressional payoffs (campaign contributions) to protect their regional monopolies. The end result is a lag in innovation that we are already witnessing. The American Internet is lagging - in every way. This will most certainly impact our ability to compete in the emerging global digital economy.

This is an important look into telecommunications and media ownership in America, and how, just as in many corporate industries, it has sacrificed service and innovation for profit and protection.
