Someone told me today that I'm wrong to despise Valentine's Day. Is this true?

No. That's not true. Though the lady and I had a wonderful day, I don't care for the holiday personally. It seems odd to exhalt one day dedicated to love...rather it would make sense that we exhalt all days and dedicate them to love. But that's just me.

    Hallmark holiday's make me ill.

Valentines day is a deception. Its not really about love. It's more like a "singles awareness day" to make those of us that dont have a significant other feel like crap and completely alone for 24 hours, much the same way christmas does to people with no family.

Greeting card companies, chocolate companies and florists created the holiday anyway.

      Bah freaking humbug.

So, what makes Valentine's Day on a par with other Hallmark holiday's like Mother's Day or Administrative Professionals' Day? Valentine's Day was celebrated at least as far back as the middle ages.

If Hallmark holiday's make you ill, then find out the historical roots to some of these holidays and don't disparage them just because some have taken commercial advantage of them and you're too ignorant about the past to know Hallmark holidays from those which commercialism have been parasitic on.

Hallmark holidays exist for a sole commercial purpose. It's not so clear Valentine's Day is like that. At least, you can strip the commercialism away. To do that, go look at how the holiday originated. You can't do that with Mothers' or Fathers' Day, since those were created for the sole purpose of commercialism.

I'm not ignorant to the origins of Valentine's Day but who celebrates Christian martyrs these days anyhow...one better, who ritually purifies home and soul according to Roman tradition on this day? That's like telling a kid Christmas isn't about presents...yeah right. Or is Christmas about the Roman festival of Saturnalia...the birth of a prophet? Is Easter about the ressurection of a dead prophet or is it about Astara or is it about hiding hardboiled eggs from kids and feeding them chocolate all day?

Valentine's Day is no different than any of the other commercialized holidays we celebrate...and no, you can't strip the commercialism away as long as people still think it's all about chocolate hearts and romancing your significant other one night out of the year.

But if you're celebrating like they did way back when today...then more power to you! I raise my beer. But as for me...Hallmark Holidays make me ill. :P

I don't mean the commercialism; a past Experience has caused this day, V-Day, to represent pain to me (no it wasn't a break-up or anything trivial), and this friend of mine informed me that letting this cast a shadow over the holiday is wrong. I just ignore the commercial aspect of it (solution: don't watch TV); that's not a problem.

                Re: Valentine's Day

Sure, don't celebrate the holiday if you don't believe in it or whatever. I never claimed that we should all celebrate it. But, don't disparage it solely on the grounds that "I hate Hallmark Holidays." I you know the history of the holiday, then you know it's not a Hallmark Holiday. That the holiday has been taken commercial advantage of doesn't mean that those who celebrate it are celebrating a Hallmark Holiday. The tradition of giving small gifts or notes goes a long way back. It's much older than the Hallmark company. That the holiday has been commercialized in our society doesn't mean that the traditions that underpin the holiday are invalid.

I find it completely asinine to ask whether we celebrate holidays like communities did hundreds of years ago, as if not celebrating them exactly the same way means we don't celebrate the same holidays. Moreover, that you can't seem to strip the commercialism away doesn't mean that others can't. Have you been to a Catholic church on Easter? You assert that nobody can strip away the commercialism. I guess everyone at Easter mass must be thinking about hunting painted eggs--and that's it.

Well...that's debatable. I don't think I've ever witnessed anyone cleansing themselves or mourning a dead martyr on this day. But I do see your point. I'd be more inclined to believe that there are more people who celebrate Christmas, Easter and St. Patrick's Day for what they really are rather than the commercialized holidays they've become than I would believe that anyone actually celebrates Valentine's Day beyond the boxed chocolates and candy hearts.

                      Re: Valentine's Day

I never really liked the holiday. I was the kid that got all the crappy, leftover cards at the elementry school parties.

But my wife adores the day and it makes her happy for a while. For me that makes it worth all the expense and time.

Yea, it may be a 'faked' holiday. But the computer games I play are also fake.

It's all about the woman you are with, my wife is perfectly fine with just a nice dinner out. This year I gave Hallmark their money for a card in the morning then took her out to dinner. And then when we got home I pulled the new Wii out of the trunk of my work car and gave that to her. She could not be happier and neither could I. While flowers are nice, my wife would prefer having more than one "Wii" to play with.
