  • The Budget Poster

This wandered across my rss feedreader today. Thought it might be appealing for the masses here.

    I like pictures!

I think my favorite part of that is realizing that there's a circle BEHIND the rectangle with all the spending in it (you can only see the top and bottom); and it's NINE times the size of the inner "total spending budget" circle.

Yeah, that makes me feel GREAT.

Isn't that circle the National Debt?

I bet they could spare 10 million for me somewhere in all those circles and nobody would ever notice.

Scary, huh? Precisely why I don't want to pay more in taxes. I'd be willing to, if I knew the government could spend money wisely, but it hurts when millions are going into research to find out why some people don't like beets, or they spend thousands on a single toilet seat. The government is so full of wasteful and bloated spending. And much of this was when the Republicans controlled congress! So when Dems talk about raising taxes for "the good of the people," I'm not sure I buy it. Social issues aside, right or left aside, it'd be nice to see our politicians start to show some fiscal responsibility.

Hey, it takes a lot of hard work to keep up with the precedent set by Liberal budgets after all. :row__523:

Also note that the center circle is "discretionary spending only". Automatic mandatory spending represents about twice that much money.

How big is the GDP compared to that? How big is the interest payment on the debt? Presumably the economy melts down when the interest grows bigger than GDP.
