  • Video: Bad mortor round vaporizes terrorist, and the science behind it...

It's not really that graphic, there's just an explosion and no more terrorist, but I suppose a NSFW warning is still in order.

The actual video is only a few seconds long, but is preceded by an advertisement. Annoying, but you can click on the progress slider to skip the ad.

And here's the science behind the explosion (which sounds good to me, but I really don't know if it's true or not):

These comments are from a friend in the military weapons biz......

    -----------------------------------------------------
Someone sent me this short clip and I really dug it because I know
exactly what is happening in this video...

Attached video shows an Iraqi insurgent attempting to fire an (older
    vintage) Eastern Bloc 60mm mortar.

In the video, he drops the mortar bomb down the tube and when it reaches
bottom, the entire launcher and insurgent disappear in an explosion.
There's no blood/guts/gore....he just disappears in the explosion before
the short video snippet cuts off.

The moral to this story is "don't buy cheap foreign mortars." What is
happening in the clip is called adiabatic initiaion. It is always
catastrophic to the gunner (actually cannoneer) when it occurs.

This happens when careless ammo producers (Chinese, Ruskys, et al)
melt-pour TNT into their mortar shells and then do not tightly control
the cooling phase as the TNT hardens back to solid. TNT has parafin wax
(usually) as the binder. Anyone who has ever made a homemade candle from
parafin knows that the wax tends to shrink substantially as it cools.

Mortars are loaded (poured) from the forward end, then cooled, then a
fuze is screwed down into the mouth of the forward end. If the TNT is
allowed to "skin over" on the top surface during the cooling phase, the
bottom of the shell will cool last....and this is a VERY BAD thing.

It results in what we call "base separation"...i.e. the base of the
charge actually pulls away from the shell body leaving an air-gap in the
    base of the shell.

When the mortar is fired, the immediate setback event can register up to
about 3,000 Gs of force (3K times the force of gravity) in the 60mm
system. This crushes the explosive upon itself causing it to reach
"critical density" causing it to initiate adiabatically.

    Poof!....no more bad guy!

This is also why every US mortar shell is (a) tightly controlled during
the cooling phase and NEVER allowed to skin over. We actually apply
outside heating to the mouth of the shell to ensure the mouth cools
last, and (b) we X-RAY every shell after cooling to ensure no base
separation has occurred. It makes the mortars more expensive, but I'll
guarantee you've never seen this type thing happen in US shells. I've
drop-fired at least a thousand 60mm shells in my career and never had a
    concern about adiabatic initiaion.

Seeing video like this reminds me of how bad it can be.

    Wow...crazy vid and explanation!

Did you notice that the majority of the "fireball" seems to originate from the insurgent and not from the tube? I realize that at normal speed it is hard to see the actual ignition, but it literally looks like that the explosion actually caused the insurgent to explode as well.

Yes the fact that the explosion really seemed to be...the terrorist...was quite shocking. The explosion, meh, we've all seen something along these lines. Reality is cold and merciless though...no classic scream, no steady camera, no lies.

Kinda looks like the explosion came out from the bottom of the base and expanded out towards him.

The CIA should start selling faulty mortar rounds to terrorists.
