  • UF Student Tazered at John Kerry Speech

I really don't know how to describe it, but it sounds like conservation officers putting down an injured deer:

    Wow.

That was amusing...I like how the cameraman couldn't avoid laughing when the guy decided to accuse Kerry of being part of Skull & Bones. ;)

Yeah, notice how the cops are ready to just sit back and laugh about it all until he brings up Skull and Bones, then it's, "ZZZZZZAP"

Looks like S&B has a strong influence on the UF campus police. I smell a cover up

I just wish they had moved more quickly so I wouldn't have had to suffer through all of that whining.

The police wanted to escort the kid out of the hall for one reason or another. I would assume that they got instructions from Kerry's handlers to get him out of there. If you listen to the rather faint background conversation you can hear them simply asking him to leave.

Of course he refused and started being disruptive at which point the police decided to escort him out. Then, acting as I've seen many college students do, he seems to think he has the constitutional right to resist arrest.

All in all, he was just trying to be a jackass in every way possible including his "questions" and overall behavior.

He was addressing a politician at a public speech, he had every right to to make his point (no matter how bad his attempt). Removing him as quick as they did actually is an offense to free speech since he was simply removed for bringing up points he thought were relevant to Kerry.

There was absolutely no reason for him to be tasered that I saw as he was not striking back at officers and did not present a threat to anyone. A taser is not a toy and should not be used to submit someone who is simply not complying but is not being violent. Although the camera work was shaky he was not seen by me to be attacking the officers, just not complying.

Not complying is not resisting, fighting back is resisting.

I think the campus police or whatever the law enforcement agency was dealing with the kid could have handled it better. But I don't think he was "simply removed for bringing up points he thought were relevant to Kerry". Personally, I think he was openly mocking Kerry in a rather obtuse fashion. I've never been a Kerry fan and I wouldn't vote for him if he was the only candidate running in ANY election, but the kid was being a punk.

As for the use of the taser (if it was indeed a taser and not just some other stun gun); I think that was actually the perfect use for it. It got him to comply with law enforcement without forcing them to sit on him and/or allow the situation to escalate to a point where it could cause someone physical injury.

I also disagree with your statement that not complying is not resisting. Based on a fresh review of the definition, I think he was most certainly resisting by refusing to comply. Fighting back is assault. Sure, assaulting a police officer can certainly be a form of resistance, but I don't think it's a necessary requirement.

There is another video you can look at that shows the ordeal a little more clearly:

Here is our local news papers coverage of it: http://www.gainesvillesun.com/articl...7016/1002/NEWS

There is a proper way to express your rights, but I think he crossed the line for the kind of event he was at. I do however, feel the taser might be a bit much. At least they didn't use pepper spray. I was watching a fight on the street during the Gasperilla(sp) night parade in Tampa, in some genius cop decided to use Pepper Spray/OC on the guys fighting not thinking about the consequences of the light breeze and excessively packed streets around him. Not a fun experience as that just caused a stampede of people with burning eyes and noses.

I think your perception of free speech is a bit skewed here. This was a University sponsored event with a prominent politician. They have a schedule, and decorum sensibilities apply. The student didn't have a right to go on and on at his will.

From what I understand he had monopolized more than his fair share of time and they had cut his mic off (hence the applause when the police intervened). From that point forward free speech isn't on the list of excuses for his behavior. He could've gone outside on the street corner if free speech is what he wanted.

                              edit:
