  • Facebook: More Popular than Porn

So, I see that TG has its own Facebook group:

    http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2231857543

That I was prompted to see if it existed after reading this article:

    Facebook: More Popular than Porn

Now I was going to make this a poll, but evidently there is no option to create a poll :(

So, whats others take on this Social Networking craziness? I do have a Facebook account, but only after being hounded by various friends. Not a big fan of putting my life on display. But then, apparently I fit the demographic (25+) that prefers Porn over Facebook, and when I think about it, I gotta agree with that!
I am the one, I am the zero, I am your low resolution hero.

Re: Facebook: More Popular than Porn

My personal take on it is the same as my draw to TG, keeping in touch with people that I dont have regular contact with. I started the facebook group for TG, and like you Daxx, I only joined facebook after being hounded by friends who insisted that I get it. Facebook is, in its current vestige, pretty much immune to forms of spam (like the porn-invite spam that myspace has). It also has numerous features that allows other friends and family to have a more broad, but still user-limited view of your life in any way you choose.

Some people tend to use these things to seek out random people that look like they have something in common, which is why you can find people on facebook, like myspace, with thousands of friends. My facebook is used to keep in connection with people that I know or share some larger common interest with (such as folks from TG). I have 20 friends on my list, not exactly spectacular, but I'm not shooting to be Mr. Popular either. I'm 25, popularity as a status symbol no longer matters to me.

I think a big reason for the social networking sites is so that the average person can be an internet junkie without being labeled a computer nerd. Think about it, 10 years ago, when I was in high school, the few of us that actually had websites were huge nerds because we knew how to write html and such. Would the quarterback of the football team have had one, or the head cheerleader, or the king of the ultra-rich preppy crowd? Not a chance, it would have lowered their position in the "cool" pecking order. But now? I can pretty much give you a solid guarantee that all the cool people have their own myspace page, facebook page, friendster page, etc etc etc, because it's socially acceptable to use those sites without being considered a geek.

The same thing goes for people in the professional world. The social networking sites allow for expansion of business sites and distribution of business media to a much larger span of people without having to spend huge sums in advertising revenue. 10 years ago, the chances of getting people to your website if you were a band or promotion company was only done through first person interaction like posters, album sales, fliers, and other materials that had the website printed on it. These days, you can go on myspace and sample music from thousands upon thousands of artists based on music preference alone. You can share that music with your "friends" just by posting a song in your profile. Businesses on facebook can create business alliances and perform networking, and also keep a moderate eye on their employees through using these sites. All things beneficial.

Now, is there any reason why any one person should belong to a thousand of such sites? Not really, unless you really want to and have nothing better to do with your time, but in moderation, theyre a great tool and provide some social positives through their very existence.

I had a myspace, always hated it. dirty dirty dirty.

Then my school got tired of myspace and we all went to facebook.

Now all our profiles look the same and its just as stupid as myspace :)

Re: Facebook: More Popular than Porn

Within a week of getting on MySpace, I had three people contact me that I hadn't heard from in years.

I'm sold on the value of social networking. I think that what you see on those sites is the result of semi-anonymous social networking. If there was one out there that required a credit card and ID verification, it could be much more valuable. But it wouldn't be successful for the same reasons...

Facebook and Myspace are good for the illiterate. For those of you who can string words together, try WordPress, instead.

If you have your own web space with access to PHP and MySQL, you can install it there. For everyone else, just get a free WordPress account and use their hosting.

Wordpress' networking is lacking to say the least.

Exactly. I found one of my friends from boot camp and my first unit through a friend of my cousin. The value of the social networking is enormous, IMO.

As much as I don't like using Myspace, so many people I know do it has been a great way to keep in touch with friends who change their cell numbers daily. Facebook is so much of a cleaner interface but accomplishes the same thing and for that I like it.

Re: Facebook: More Popular than Porn

I'm starting to hate Facebook more and more with all the annoying things they're putting out now. Came really close to deleting my account when they had the big change last year some time because of all the random and annoying invites/friend requests I was getting. Not to sound rude, but when the high school kids were let in, Facebook really lost a lot of what it originally had.

Nowadays, I don't mind as much, I turned a LOT of things off to get rid of some annoyances. I've been finding it very useful over the last month or so, meeting random people and being able to get in touch with them pretty easily.

Companies now will look you up on these sites to try and see what you're like and sometimes even deny an interview based on what they find online. Thats pretty lame when you consider that you can tag anyone in a photo and say its them, or even just go and make a random account with a name and put anything you want in.

I have an account, I think... I'm just not sure what to do with it.

You search for mis-understood, emotionally unstable, needy, father-figure less girls, duh.

Just kidding. They dont have to be father-lessly disfigured.
that sounds like a good idea trooper.

My friends and I use Facebook as a way to organize events and see who's going to what without having to ask. We can create private events so our lives aren't broadcast to the world. It eliminates calling or emailing everybody to tell them what's up.

If you've ever used Outlook or some other office tool at work for scheduling meetings, Facebook is pretty good for that kind of stuff in the personal world. It's one thing that I like about it more than any other social-networking site.
