  • The white man blues

Ok, i live in a town that is basically a huge college. We have dozen of scholarships and such that help pay for college since tuition is around 40k. The population has almost no majority and we are extremely diverse.

At the High School, we had a ceremony that was giving out scholarships and i hear woman's scholarships, african american scholarships, latino, asian scholarships, and combos like African-American women scholarships.

I don't mean to be racists, but there was only 3 scholarships that were generic and were allowed to be awarded to a Caucasian male. Being one of those, i started thinking that why should I have to pay almost full price for college when an equally smart friend of mine who is African American and female can go for 4 years free because of all the scholarships she can apply for.

I asked my father about this and I do qoute:

"Son, welcome to the white man blues."

Most likely has something to do with wealth distribution by race:

Statistically, black families do not make the money white families do. Hence, they have less opportunity for educational advancement past high school.

Now, there is some PC crap involved in all this. You won't see Bill Gates starting a scholarship program for WASPs, but then again it's understandable when you look at the amount of wealth already owned by whites.

Is it fair to white families with less money? No, but then again, who said life was fair?

No pun intended, but white man's blues pale in comparison to the non-white man's blues. Do some research on the concept of scholarship based on race and income. This is a debatable subject, but its fundamental principles are fairly universal - that access to scholarship in education should be solely based on aptitude or performance and that ethnicity, race and income are important factors. When properly designed and managed, race and income based scholarship has helped break down significant barriers in education. If in some ways this seems unfair to white people, it is, but I think if you look at the bigger picture it is a price that needs to be paid if we all truly desire to live in an equal society.

Race based scholarships are utter bs and racist in my opinion. My parents didn't help me at all with paying for college, so I was annoyed when I graduated high school and saw so many getting hispanic scholarships and such, while I wasn't entitled to the same opportunities. And in this age, there is equal opportunity for minorities. People can get college help from the military, the peace corps, etc. There are ways to pay for it that are not race-based.

Now if I were to start a scholarship for underprivileged caucasian males, would I be labeled a racist/sexist? Absolutely, but I'm thinking about doing it when I'm rich so that I can someday help a poor kid out who the rest of our pc society dumps on.

Hispanic scholarships also annoyed me, because I grew up in a town where I was the minority. In my middle school, I was one of like 3 white kids. It sucked. I was definitely discriminated against, but THEY were offered muchos scholarships just for being brown. Not cool.

It's not a matter of race, but culture.

Opportunity is all over the place. Being black doesn't mean you can't go to the library and fish some old-but-99%-fine textbooks out of the dump bin. It isn't the man's fault if you CHOOSE to study breakdancing and basketballing instead of chemistry and physics just so you won't be occasionally taunted by neighborhoodlums who have trouble writing their 4's correctly and pronouncing the sound.

As for racist scholarships, it makes you wonder where the Helping The Worthy Needy ends and the Neo-Socialist Browine Points and Tax Write-offs begin.

Racist attitudes like this are precisely why these scholarships exist.

Xan, it isn't racist if the statement is unaffected by exchanging the colours.

                  Re: The white man blues

How closely have you looked at what scholarships are available?

Maybe things have changed but when I went to college 93-98 there where hundreds of scholarships available to anybody. They had values of anywhere between about $50 and full ride.

One of the differences I noticed was those set up for a specific subgroup usually had staffs that sought out applicants. The general ones took more work on the person seeking them.

Also, colleges, because they want to be diversified at the least cost to them, help the minorities with scholarship placement.

Plus many scholarships are created by those that came from nothing. For some crazy reason minorities try to help out other less fortunate minorities. Rich white guys tend to buy new buildings with their names on them and dump millions into the sports program. Rich white guy vanity, who would of thunk it?

But really, do a bit of research and you will find lots of scholarships available to you. Because they are more general the competition for them is greater so you have to be better than the other person and faster to the application. But put some work into it and you might get some. Especially go after the smaller 50-100 dollar ones. A couple of them and you are talking some real help. They are easier to get as well because they are small amounts.

If private interest groups fund scholarships, then they can give them to who ever they chose.

If I were to set aside 100k for a scholarship, I could select the most absurd criteria in existence... how about The scholarship for individuals over 6 feet tall, but less than 6'3" who don't play basket ball, but who are black, but on the chess team, for no more than 1 semester....

Before getting outrage, find out where the money comes from.
